I just think that it is really fun to watch these 2 pitch. It just reminds me of 03 with Wood and Prior.

one good start by marmol and marshall's 4.43 era remind you of prior's near cy young season and wood's 14 win, 3.19 era and amazing pitching down the stretch leading the cubs to the postseason? that's some imagination you got there.

While I agree it's a stretch. He's just basically excited to see some pretty decent young guys step up and possibly be our pitchers next year. Don't put a downer on that please!! You have to remember also that marshalls ERA is inflated by that one inning where he gave up like 6 or 7 runs. He's had a handful of only giving up 1-3 runs per game.

4 of his 12 starts he's been pretty bad(4 ER/4.1 IP, 4 ER/5 IP, 9 ER/3.2 IP, 7 ER/3.1 IP), so it's not like one or two outings are really skewing his numbers.

The two outings where he gave up 4 runs were the first two starts of his career and his pitch counts were likely limited (65 and 79 pitches). I wouldn't call those "pretty bad" since the Cubs won both of those games. Since then he has had two bad starts out of the remaining 10. He's also had 7 quality starts.

Exactly. Minus those two starts, his ERA is in the mid two's for the other 10 starts, with about 40 hits allowed in 60 innings pitched. VERY VERY impressive indeed. (and that still includes his first two starts)

If Marshall can eliminate the blowups (again, which have been 2 of 12 starts...or 1 in 6), he should be well above average.

Too bad those blowups happen though....

I don't get what you're trying to say. Are you saying too bad they HAPPENED to marshall. You think they will continue to happen to marshall. Too bad it happens to ALL pitchers?

The point is that Marshall has pretty much been as good as his numbers indicate. He's had some pretty bad ones and some pretty good ones. Right now he's had more good than bad and his numbers reflect that pretty accurately.

I don't know about you, but that looks pretty encouraging. Ignore his first two ML starts, and he looks very strong.

Aren't those couple bad starts sprinkled in between his great starts considered "growing pains" we should let our young pitchers go through? The more starts he get the more he will become a confident, consistant major league pitcher.

I wouldn't get too excited yet. Marmol, for one, is going to have to vary his game a little, or veteran teams like the cards and astros are going to treat him like a batting practice rag doll. Two pitches won't do it at this level, but he knows that, seems like a good kid, anyone asking for advice from Maddux and being public about it has his head screwed on straight. Wood is done. Prior...there's still hope.

Huh? Marmol threw 4 pitches yesterday (4-seamer, 2-seamer, breaking ball, changeup).

I like a 10 pitch or less inning but 4 pitches in 6 innings is pretty good! :D

Maybe he can teach Woody the value of a changeup.

of course. but comparisons to 2003 prior and wood seem quite premature.

by the way, thanks to everyone for jinxing him tonight...

Well, if you actually read my post, I just said that I enjoy watching them pitch as much as I did Wood and Prior in 03. I never once said that they were as good as those 2. I just like what these kids bring to the table.

Jeez

sorry...i didn't know that by saying that marmol and marshall "remind" you of wood and prior that it meant that you merely enjoyed watching them pitch as much as you enjoyed watching wood and prior. when someone says that something "reminds" them of something else, i foolishly assume there's a comparison involved.

It looks like the comparison he was making was to his experience in 2003, not the talent level of Wood and Prior as it relates to Marmol and Marshall. The "it" refers back to the previous sentence-i.e. the verb "watch."

The "with" also distinguishes the point. Had he been referring to the talent level of Wood/Prior, he would have written "It reminds me of Wood and Prior in 03."

Okay, I need to get a life...
