ABC7 Chicago

June 9, 2006 (Last Updated: 10:17:13 PM) - He may be the most famous name in Cubs history and now there are reports Chicago legend Ernie Banks wants to buy his former team. The report is published by "Crain's Chicago Business". That report also says there are reasons the Tribune company might be ready to sell the team.

There's been a lot of talk in recent weeks about aggressive actions the Tribune Company may need to take to right its slumping stock price. Some have speculated that the companies broadcast properties may be sold, but others say it is the Cubs that will fetch a big price. If that's the case, we know one guy who is willing to step up to the plate.

It's not like he's going to do it alone. He'll be a big apart of it because of karma and knowledge of the game.

he better have a huge financial backer, because its gonna cost him a small fortune.

Yup... $600-$800 million.

Says on the Trib website that Fitzsimmons turned him down and said they were not for sale. :x

Who would have thought Ernie Banks would have been a potential suitor for the Cubs? Maybe he is getting as tired of them losing as we are.

no offense to ernie, but i doubt that his baseball philosophy differs much from dusty.

It's impossible to know, really, because Banks has been just been a PR guy as far as Cubs fans are concerned.

I'd suspect that same thing that you do, though.

This Trib-owned ship is sinking fast and it's really hard to say that the current payroll justifies the results that the Trib-owned Cubs have accrued since '81-82 whenever they bought the Cubs. Something is rotten in Cubdom, and ownership may have to change to eradicate the stink.

That's what I thought right after finding out the thread wasn't about Philip.

Is that a Fresh Prince reference?

I think it should cause a commotion that Mr. Cub thinks that the Cubs are for sale; that he could do a better job running them than the current regime; and that he no doubt had a hand in making this gambit for ownership public.

Music to my ears. I wouldn't support him buying the Cubs without knowing more about his ownership philosophy ... but that's not even the point.

Mr. Cub seems to believe the Cubs are for sale.

Then Carlton can drop by for the seventh inning stretch.

I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see Mr. Cub at the park for a while. They'll probably want to keep him away to avoid speculation.

No kidding.

apples and oranges

Ernie saying he wants to buy the Cubs = greater likelihood that the Cubs might be sold, regardless of who ends up buying them

Posted

yep, most significant thing taken from this is that the likelihood of the cubs being sold could be quite high.

would love to see cuban come in and spend $140 million next year.

You make a very valid point. Might as well clean house all the way to the top (and come back with Cuban).

Ok, you win. That's freaking awesome.

I think I'd much rather see Cuban come in and install a different organizational philosophy than spend more money. The money was more than enough to get the job done but the team was constructed with faulty premises.

If ernie were owner, we'd be much more rested for the playoffs.

why?

We play 162 days now.

With ernie, every home game would be part of a double header, thus only 121 days of playing.

BRILLIANT!

Exactly the point I drew. Much more of a real hint than the Mariotti-driven "suggestions". Maybe the two can intersect.
