Wait a minute, I just realized everyone's talking about Kerry like he died. From what I've heard on the radio, he's not likely to go on the DL and missing his next start is only a "possibility". It's been a few hours, have I missed something?

I think people are just realizing that there's a strong chance that he may not regain the form we all hoped he would. I'd be absolutely thrilled if I'm wrong.

Sheesh, that's what I was thinking too. The last part of this thread sounds like a eulogy.

Sorry----yeah, I'm referring to original Kerry. The one who threw a hook that broke 2 feet, and could blow a 98 MPH fastball by anyone any time he wanted.

I feel pretty safe in saying we won't see that guy again.

I'm pretty sure this is what everybody outside of this organization thinks of us. Complete and utter disaster.

From Rotoworld:

Ben Franklin once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

From that statement we can probably assume that had Franklin not died several hundred years ago he’d be a Cubs fan. In what has become an annual tradition, the Cubs have once again brought Kerry Wood back from injury too soon and then made things worse by ignoring the early signs of him aggravating the problem.

Wood experienced soreness in his shoulder after returning from the disabled list last month, but all the Cubs did was push his next start back a couple days. Then Wood complained of more soreness after his first start of June, and the team again pushed his next start back two days. Now it appears as though Wood’s right shoulder has had enough.

After lasting just 3.2 innings in his pushed-back start against the Astros Tuesday Wood flew to Cincinnati to be examined by Dr. Tim Kremcheck, who did the initial surgery on his shoulder. The Cubs reportedly don’t expect the examination to reveal significant damage, but then again that’s something they’ve said plenty in the past about both Wood and Mark Prior.

For now Wood remains scheduled to start Sunday, but that seems less likely than another stint on the DL. Perhaps one of these years the Cubs will actually treat him with the kid gloves Wood’s many injuries have proven that he needs, because at this point manager Dusty Baker’s “throw some dirt on it and get back out there” method of recovery hasn’t worked particularly well.

While Cubs fans wonder how Carlos Zambrano has managed to remain so healthy, here are some other notes from around baseball …

How much kid gloves do they expect the Cubs to employ then? If they would have treated him with kid gloves he wouldn't have pitched a single inning since 2003. So I'm sort of confused by that article. Are they saying we should have dumped him 3 years ago? Or are they really suggesting we should be paying a player 10 million per year to sit at home and never pitch?

I can understand if they're saying we should have given up on him sooner. But it seems like they're suggesting we should just sit him forever while still paying him a fortune. That's insane, IMO.

Gotta defend the Cubs org here. Wasn't everyone complaining that the Cubs were babying their players too much and being extra cautious? Now they are letting their player pitch through the pain and they get ripped on for that. I dunno, maybe most of the babying was aimed at Prior, and maybe I don't know the full story, but it seems really hypocritical to rip on the Cubs for letting Wood pitch through pain.

Careful how you use the word everyone. I know quite a few people who would never accuse the Cubs of babying pitchers.

could have brought wood back in july and he'd still have the same problems. make him a reliever or something.

i hope he's not starting on sunday. i'm tired of seeing him out their struggling. bring on marmol.

Agreed. Out with the old, in with the new. (I know Wood is still young, but he looks likes he's 35 out on the mound).

Expectation already so high for Marmol. Don't get too excited, he is a two pitch pitcher that has done well in the bullpen only having to face hitters once. He has electric stuff but I think if he performs as well as Marshall we should be happy, in a starting role that is.

Marmol also has a pretty good change that he hasn't used because he's been pitching in relief. He's got a plus fastball and a plus curveball. And if he pitches as well as Marshall I think most of us will be thrilled. Marshall has been wonderful this year.

Agreed. If Dusty insists on naming a savior, he should start with Marshall.

I agree. Wood could've sat out the entire year this year and still had the same problems for next year. Pitchers don't get paid 12 million dollars a year to not pitch.

BAck to the DL Wood Goes. Joy.

It was just on the ESPN bottom line. Link to come.

Saw that. Guess hes not starting on Sunday lol

Edit:when he doesn't play the rest of the year, he will make 3.375 million per start this year. Congrats Kerry.

are we all that conditioned whenever wood pitches bad that we think the worst is going to happen? i think some of you are jumping the gun on this...if he goes on the DL, i'll eat my words, but i think we all need to take a step back and see how he pitches his next time out.

i am a man of my word...

does anyone have a word-eating emoticon? i guess this will do...

Guzman's called up? I'd still like to see Marmol get a chance to start once.

I'm guessing Marmol gets the shot at starting, and Guzman is long man...just a hunch.

I do believe Len mentioned the same thing earlier today too.
