this is from BA "The Cubs, as expected, took Jeff Samardzija in the fifth round with their second pick. The Notre Dame righthander and All-America wide receiver intends to play both sports, which scared off teams enough to help him drop to the Cubs. The Cubs might spend first-round money on Samardzija in what's sure to be a back-loaded deal that allows him to play football this fall, a commitment Samardzija has made repeatedly. Samardzija has first-round talent with a fastball up to 94 mph and a developing slider that has shown improvement this spring as his season progressed and he got deeper into baseball season. The Cubs have a strong relationship with Notre Dame, as both scouting director Tim Wilken and especially GM Jim Hendry are longtime friends of Irish coach Paul Mainieri."

Once he signs a professional contract he can't go back and play at the NCAA level in a different sport though can he? Will he wait and just sign a deal before spring training next year and forgo the NFL Draft?

First round money and letting him play football doesn't strike me as the greatest of plans.

I agree it would not take much to get hurt playing WR

I thought there was a thing about major college players who step back on campus not being able to sign. Wasn't that the thing with Brownlie? Or was that a Boras imposed deadline?

I don't understand this move at all. He doesn't seem like much of a prospect to begin with, and he has enormous baggage with the football situation.

I think they can do both. Cedric Benson was in the Dodgers farm system. I'm not sure how it works though.

Drew Henson did. He signed with the Yankees and suited up for the Wolverines, right?

They must feel confident that they can sign Samardzija to give up the only other pick they have in the first 5 rounds other than Colvin otherwise would be questionable.

In fact, this whole draft has been questionable in my mind. I trust Wilken as he has a proven track-record from Toronto. His hands are somewhat tied though with only a couple picks to deal with.

How do you pronounce Samardzija?

Sah-MARD-zija?

Yep. He could play football, but he couldn't play baseball for Michigan once he signed.

and he is a pitcher, getting tackled and having your sholder driven into the ground is great for your fastball

The only way this makes sense to me is if the kid is a die-hard Cubs fan and let it be known that he would only quit football for a chance to play for the Cubs. He's got no incentive to sign for anything less than top dollar, but it doesn't make sense to give top dollar to a guy who is going to go risk injury on the football field and look to be a 2 sport star.

I agree. I assume the Cubs have had talks with him and feel they can sign him to play baseball.

Unless he's soft, he should get up and go right back to throwing 94.

I remember him wearing a sox hat in a ND halftime segment about him and his dad during a game on NBC.
