With his resurgence from a horrible start would it be a good time to look at trading Jones while his value may be extremely high? I believe now is the time to dump him and get rid of that horrible contract. Who would match up with the Cubs and is looking for a left handed hitting outfielder? Who are the potential trading partners and what would they have to offer?

I think if you do it, you'd have to wait a little longer, and hope his numbers stay solid while you wait. If the team scuffles around .500 between now and the ASB, their chances would be practically nil. Then you can deal him. But I don't think the timing is right at this moment to make a deal. If he plays over his head and the team roars back into contention, you might have to keep him for now.

Agreed. Though you wonder if you can strike at the Yanks while their iron is burning hot. He could do a lot of damage with that short RF porch at Yankee Stadium.

If they keep putting up 10+ against the Red Sox their iron won't be that hot. You need a couple low scoring games with their pitching staff getting blown out to really get them going.

Even if the Cubs get back into it, I still hope they trade him because I don't believe that he can keep up this pace for the remaining 2.5 years left on the contract, the sooner they are able to deal him the better. I do agree with holding onto him until a little closer to the deadline in hopes of attracting multiple bidders. I have nothing against Jacque, I just think Hendry way overpaid for him and if the Cubs can parlay that into getting some good talent in return I am all for it.

Oh, I completely agree with getting rid of him if you can. I just don't think the timing is right now to get it done.

Not that I want Jones and his contract for the next 2 years...but, who would you target to replace him?

Agreed. Could you see any potential trading partners come the deadline? He would obviously have to go to a contender because no small market team will take him, unless the Cubs eat most of the contract.

That is a good question and I think if you can get some prospects for Jones you might be able to turn around and trade them to a small market team near the deadline looking to unload a younger player nearing free agency. Hendry will have to get creative and even with all of his faults he has managed to put together some multi team deals that haven't been bad.

I have the feeling that if Jones keeps this up until the trade deadline, Hendry will think "wow, what a great signing I'm glad I have this guy locked up for 2 more years. He is going to be a big part of our 2007 season."

If Jones comes back down to earth and plays like he did at the beginning of the year the Cubs will be stuck with him because no one will want him. I just have this feeling that he is going to be with the Cubs one way or another.

The bottom line is all of this is Hendry is not going to trade Jones, regardless of how he plays.

Agreed. People need to stop thinking about how to trade Jacques Jones for the time being. JJ will be a Cub for at least 2 FULL years.

How do you know some dumb desperate GM won't make a great offer in hopes of contending this year and saving his job?

Maybe if Washinton ends up dealing Soriano we could get involved...

Soriano to the Yanks, JJ to DC, Melky to the Cubs!

I can dream, can't I?

What if closer to the trade deadline we try and package Jones to get Carlos Lee, assuming that the Crew knows they cant sign him next year. If we pay part of Jones salary and throw in an arm or two, maybe we could get something done. This is also contingent on Jones playing well until the deadline.

First: Steve Phillips is in the ESPN studio, so there goes your theory of "desparate GM trying to save his job."

Second: Because JJ in his first yr of the contract, and not to many teams are going to look to acquire a player at the begining of his contract. Besides, JJ is a Hendry target, and he wouldn't trade him, just yet. His value is too high, in Hendry's mind.

Third: If a desparate Gm is looking at JJ as a player who could save his job, then perhaps, said GM should be updatinghis resume, cause he will be fired, anyways.

There are some teams where money is not going to be an object and the contract will not be a huge hurdle, especially if the Cubs send some cash. The Yanks, Red Sox, etc.... if they need a left handed bat headed down the stretch they will do what it takes to win no matter what.

But Hendry isn't going to trade Jones so it doesn't matter.

I don't think you'll see a trade where it looks like we're getting rid of him and throwing in cash to help, but I can see Hendry trading him as value in a package to bring in an impact player.

I really can't. I would be very surprised if Hendry traded Jones.

As would I. June 15th is when the Cubs can trade Jones. I don't see them making that type of move until near the end of July and I agree that Jones is in Chicago to stay.
