I'm curious to hear thoughts on Chris Shaver. Big, tall, lefty, 4th round pick in 04 out of college and has gone up pretty fast through the system. Decent K rate that's better this year and not so good BB rate. What's his stuff and projectability like?

I understand that Mark Prior is going to rehab at West TN this Thurs. night against Birmingham.

Yeah, they announced it on the site. Hopefully ticket sales will go well.

Daytona taking a 3-2 lead into the 9th.

Gallagher! :D - 7IPs, 7H, 7Ks (all swinging), 2BB (both full counts), 2R/2ER

Harvey is actually starting to hit a bit - 2/4 tonight with 2 doubles (thrown out at 3rd on trying to stretch one into a triple). He gets a mention in the FSL Notebook's Daytona section:

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: Ryan Harvey has been swinging the bat well in his last five games, going 7-for-18 with three RBIs. Matt Craig has had some trouble, recording two hits in his last 17 at-bats.

Jupiter's two errors led to 2 unearned runs, the difference so far.

Layden pitched a scoreless 8th; Hunton now in for the save.

Hunton walks the leadoff hitter ---> tying run at 3rd with one out. :o

Tying run scores on a sac fly; an IBB'd batter tags and advances to 2nd with 2 outs.

Peoria down 4-2 in the 5th; The Don's allowed 4R/3ER with 5Ks / 0!BB thus far. I'm getting occasional bad static on the audio ... sounds like Nathan has a constant reverb going.

Not a great night for Veal. He hurt himself with a poor pickoff throw (although he also successfully picked a runner off before that) and a WP, allowing runners to advance to second who later scored on RBI singles.

6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 3-8 GO-FO, WP, PO

6IP 6k/0BB isn't bad, but he also allowed 8 hits, 4R/3ER (and the unearned was on his own error), and his 3-8 GO-FO ratio could definately use some work. He did a decent job with damage control, but his start sure wasn't pretty.

Veal's stuff is fascinating to me. Granted, he's an extreme flyball pitcher, but he strikes out a ton of guys. I believe after tonight, he has a 72/35 K/BB on the season (reminiscent of Renyel Pinto), and he has only allowed 4 HRs in a little under 62 IP, which is respectable in Low A. If he can keep striking out batters at that rate and reduce the flyballs, he could become a good K/Flyball pitcher down the road.

I'm curious to see what becomes of Yusuf Carter. Apparently the Cubs drafted him as a catcher, but he played in CF today. We'll see if they're just trying him around the diamond or if the catcher thing isn't going to happen.

Carter is going to have a tough time getting ABs as a Catcher for Peoria...or for any level at that. With Reed and Muyco getting a lot of ABs for Peoria, I don't know how often Carter will be seeing time behind the plate.

However, with Reed playing a little 1b/3b recently, and a lot of DH, I'm sure they can manage to get Yusuf some time down there at catcher. Muyco shouldn't be quite as high of a priority as Carter. One good thing is he's athletic enough to play CF and apparently can catch too, so he could have some good value down the road depending on his hitting ability.

Nic Jackson is up to a .331 AVG and .381 OBP with a .832 OPS. Hope he keeps it up and can stay healthy.

Definitely good to see Nic the Quick putting up numbers again now that he's healthy. He's got that gap power working for him, but the no-HR thing isn't the greatest sign. Maybe the shoulder is still not quite all the way back strength wise? However if he can keep hitting .330 and playing defense, he may find himself back in the mix as a potential major league player.

I would agree that Carter would/will have a tough time getting ABs as a catcher in Peoria. Justin Morgan retired from the club after the game on Saturday - he had really been functioning as a bullpen catcher, getting only 2 starts in the season thus far. Muyco and Reed have been alternating days, with Reed DHing on his "off" day since Kevin Collins went back on the DL (then sent back to Mesa) for whatever his foot/leg thing is.

Interestingly enough, when looking at the new roster at the game last night, Alberto Garcia is now listed as an infielder and Yusef is listed as an outfielder. All I can hope is that Yusef has got better wheels on him than he showed in the game last night - there were at least 2 balls that fell in front of him that he didn't even try to get to, then one that went over his head. He may still be learning the outfield, but Davy Gregg is much better defensively.

Also, not sure if it got mentioned elsewhere, but Mike Billek has been sent up to Daytona, with word being that he'll be a starting role up there.

Whew! guess that's all for now. I'm just hoping the Chiefs break out of whatever funk they were in with the new series tonight in Burlington.

I had alberto as an infielder all year cause thats how is listed in the Cubs media guide. Carter will not catch here at all/ He is strictly an OF at this time. I could see him behind the plate, if and only if, Reed DH's and Muyco has to be taken out of the game...

Have the Cubs scrapped the idea of Yusef catching? I saw him working with the low-A kids at catcher when I was in Mesa, so it can't be that out of the question so soon.

In his write-up on prospects after the draft last year, T2E stated that Carter had both the arm and the speed to play CF. I think more than anything right now is an adjustment period for him. He's probably been working mostly as a C in Arizona, but with the logjam at C in the system he moved to the OF instead and was able to start playing sooner. Once he gets a feel for where he is on the field and tracking flyballs, I think he'll start doing better.

Nathan, let me know if you think that I'm wrong because this is all just my opinion.

Jody told me he is an outfielder period. thats all i know now. CF and RF are in his at least very near future.
