again about wood - Move Him to the Bullpen

it looks as though woody's shoulder won't take 6 or 7 innings without tightning up. The Cubs and Woody ned to sit down and talk about late inning relief, one or two innings two or three times a week will put less stress on his arm and I think he will be a terrific sset up man to start with and a closer later.

With Miller unlikely to pitch this season, AHNOPE.

Since when has Miller been unlikely to be back this season? Last I heard a mid-June return is expected.

From Rotoworld today:

Wade Miller (shoulder) has been shut down following a setback during his rehab process.

Miller hasn't pitched since his May 27 start in extended spring training. The Cubs are hopeful he can resume throwing this week and potentially make another extended spring training start next week. It looks like he won't join the rotation until early July at best.

I'm not so sure they're there yet. I don't know how much pain Wood is really experiencing, but if it's mild (i.e. the pushback is precautionary) then I wouldn't be talking about moving him to the pen, yet. If it continues like this for a handful more starts, maybe.

i'd rather wood start every 6 days than pitch out of the 'pen.

this would be interesting. because prior could easily be in the same boat when he comes back, or at least a prohibitive pitch count. maddux and z would only want regular rest. you would want to avoid prior and wood starting back to back games to save the bullpen. dusty might have his hands full keeping everyone rested/not rusty.

That still doesn't rule him out pitching this year.

You run the risk of his only work being when his replacement (rusch / hill / ryu / guzman / williams) blows up. . . .

That would be good if the guy could actually come out and pitch every 6 days. But so far he can not. I kind of hope the Cubs trade Wood. He's not much good in the starting rotation and the Cubs won't move to the pen. Just get rid of him already.

He's coming off shoulder surgery!

Give him a chance to build up some strength.

Quit being reasonable. Wood is a bum who doesn't care about winning, and just enjoys collecting his paycheck. We should get rid of him already. Afterall he's never won 15 games.

I like Wood and want him to do well, but we should still get rid of him, for other legit reasons.

There are no legit reasons to get rid of Wood right now. None.

There are legit circumstances where it'd be acceptible to trade Wood for something else, or to allow him to walk after the season. But there's no excuse to take a player of Wood's potential and look for any opportunity to rid yourself of him.

I think cirumstances with him (injuries) and his high salary far outweigh his potential.

Yeah, nobody is saying to DFA him, just that all things considered, it's best for the Cubs to trade him or not resign him. IF he were to pitch like an allstar the rest of the season, I would pick up the option only because there is hardly anything out there free agency wise to replace him and Maddux. Right now though, Zito is definitely the best of the three to sign.

I don't think anyone is talking about anything other than trading him when they say "getting rid of him." At least anyone with half a brain.

You'd assume so, but I've got friends who keep advocate cutting him or trading him for a C level prospect or two. Perhaps it has me a bit jaded, but I'm still going to stay skeptical of anybody who proclaims we need to get rid of him.

Well anyone with 1/4 of a brain would realize that he has a

No it's moronic not to resign him if he pitches well this year. It would also be moronic to pick up his option. There are other things that can be done though, given a good year by Wood - namely an incentive laden contract.

And Jason Schmidt is available this off-season.
