Dusty and an extension

I hear a lot of talk here about Dusty being offered an extension this year. If by chance the Cubs do a turn-a-around and get to above 500 this year, there is a good probability that managment will offer him a two year contract (this, in itself, speaks volumes about how incompetent MacPhail and Hendry are).

However, is there anyone here that really thinks that Dusty would stay under any circumstance?? I really don't think he's enjoyed his time in Chicago and even if offered a lucrative contract, he will flatly turn it down and go elsewhere. After the Cubs meltdown in the NLCS, Dusty has been in the hotseat and has not done very well with the media.

Personally, I'm not worried about Dusty being here longer than this year. Don't think it's gonna happen.

Your thoughts?

Ken

If Baker is offered an extension, he will accept it.

Thanks for brightening our day Bruce! If the Cubs make it to the Playoffs this year, I am all for extending Dusty.

If that happens, I will post pictures of me eating my own hat. (and happily might I add)

A year ago, I was writing just the opposite. But it seems to me Dusty did a 180 at some point. He expressed interest in staying during spring training. Nobody wants to be fired, of course, and if the Cubs turn things around and he's offered an extension, I have no doubt whatsoever he'll accept it.

good or bad, I think Dusty has enough pride to want to prove everyone wrong. I just can't comprehend how people as dimwitted as MacPhail and hendry are running this team. I can only hope their comments are not a real reflection of what they think. baker is a waste of money but does far less damage than management in my opinion (although I will immediately turn off any game where neifi is hitting first or second).

If somehow we manage to win Sunday to complete a sweep of the Cards, I believe Hendry will announce his extension Monday. Just a hunch. Everyone says he's waiting for the right time and there may b no better time if they sweep in St. Louis.

If Dusty gets an extension, I'm done with this team until the day he is no longer manager.

Haha.

Let's stop pretending. You're never leaving. None of us here gets out alive :)

Oh, I'll still show up here to chat and talk and complain, but I'll be emotionally done.

I'm tired of investing my emotional energy in this team.

Here's how it's going to go down. The cubs will make a mini run in June. Dusty's contract will be extended. Cub fan's will start to get emotionally attached to the team again. Then guess what they will suck again.

Ditto. Extending this man would be just the commitment to losing and failure that I would need to say F this team and just wait for football and basketball to come back. The only hangup I would have is Matt Murton, whom I adore. I'll probably still check on him to see that he is progressing, but a Dusty Baker led team is no team of mine after this year.

He is the worst manager in baseball history, and I believe that with every ounce of my heart.

If we sweep the Cardinals, Dusty will be extended by Monday's game. Book it!

Not going to happen quite yet.

Jim Hendry was not about to cave into the "Fire Dusty" crowd when the team went in the tank last month (although there is this perception in the media that the concept of firing Baker suddenly cropped up a few weeks ago). He said he wanted to see how things shake out as injured players return. Conversely, he's not going to announce an extension just because of a three game winning streak, even if it comes at the expense of the Cardinals in St. Louis.

If a contract has already been hammered out between the two and the questions about Baker's status subside (and those questions will if the Cubs continue to have even a moderate amount of success), there's no reason to announce anything just yet.

While I would have to agree with that statement, you are forgetting that Dusty was on deck when Aaron hit 715. He deserves an extension on that alone. Give him three more years!

He's also a 3-time manager of the year and he was the toast of town in 2003. That merits a lifetime commitment!!!

The only way I can stomach a Dusty extension is if the team wins the World Series this year. For all I care, Dusty can rot here until he dies if that happens.

Agreed. Anything for a World Series title at this point.

True. But a Dusty Baker extention is not going to bring us one.
