Lofton over Pierre plus the prospects the Cubs lost. Oh well, maybe something good may come out of this.

He probably would have inked a 1 yr deal. I agree.

Gee, when I suggested it, everyone told me he was washed up and on the brink of a massive decline in production.

You often jump on people for generalizing (and rightfully so), so I must ask, to whom are you referring?

Not me. My 2005 offseason saw Lofton, Hairston and Patterson as the CF options for 2006. :P

Everyone probably wasn't the right word, but the vast majority of responses regarding Lofton were less than favorable. I'm not one to point fingers, but I don't remember a whole lot of support back then.

I had Lofton with Hairston as the primary backup. Patterson was Nomar's backup in RF. :(

There were a LOT of people suggesting that signing Lofton for one year was better than trading for Pierre if you had to have a leadoff CF. There were concerns about him being able to sustain his 2005 level of performance due to BABIP, but a lot of people (myself included) much preferred a cheap signing over an expensive trade for an overrated player.

Warpticon is correct. Jason Michaels, Milton Bradley and Julio Lugo come to mind as other potential lead off candidates that received mention here. I'm sure there's more. Lugo would have been just as expensive as Pierre, however.

Yeah, but we might have been able to get Aubrey Huff with him as well.

Lofton was going to fall off a cliff production wise this year, blah blah blah. I heard that so many times this offseason.

I wanted Lofton. I've wanted Lofton since he left.

Lofton's age was a big concern of mine. Players are more likely to get hurt when they join the Cubs.

Hopefully, Pie can solidify cf for the next 15 years.

There were a lot of people saying Lofton was done. We only needed a placeholder until Pie was ready, and Lofton with some combination of Hairston and Patterson would have been just fine.

I was down on moving Patterson because he wasn't worth anything. I wouldn't have expected what he is doing in Baltimore right now, but I have to admit it's a bit frustrating that we gave him away so he could play this well somewhere else.

If Hendry and Baker and their posse was gone at the end of 2005, could the new management team have done something decent with Patterson so that he would have been worth something at the trade deadline, or better yet, win his everyday job back?

I'm having a tough time not blaming the coaching staff for everything that went wrong with Patterson.

I've missed him since 2003 as well.

Lofton has started hitting a crazy amount of line drives at the end of his career, it's bizarre.

That's just baseball.

He probably will...for the New York Yankees.

there was a lot of lofton bashing on this board when his name came up this offseason. It's rare that you will get someone to post and admit to this offseason the same with those who where upset to give up Choi for Lee.
