From Will Carroll's article in today's BP:

...Prior is appearing to grow frustrated with the handling of his rehab. The plan of three rehab starts is being questioned publicly by Dusty Baker, while Prior is trying to explain why he’s not where the public thinks he should be. Prior has a point on his velocity--that he often increases over the course of a game--but those who saw the start say that he looked fine, but that the ball doesn’t have the same explosion or late life that he normally shows. The worst of the problem for Prior isn’t the public, but the whispers from within the walls of Wrigley.

You gotta be freakin' kidding me.

I could not possibly hate the people running this club any more than I do right now.

Why exactly? All I see there is that the baseball people watching him think he is throwing fine and 100%, but he's lost a little on his fastball. Prior thinks if he keeps pitching the velocity will eventually come back. Nobody knows for sure whether it will or not. How long should they really wait before accepting him for who he is whenever they call him up? I'd give him another start or two, but I don't think he should get 10 starts or anything like that.

It's insanity to rush Prior back to a team that's out of the race. Madness.

Sorry Marky Mark. But the Cubs should take their time.

Update from Cubs.com.

Mark Prior was in Cincinnati on Sunday to throw a bullpen session. He is between Minor League starts while rehabilitating a strained muscle in his right shoulder.

He is scheduled to make a start at Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. He said he expects to throw around 90 pitches. At West Tenn on Thursday, Prior threw 76 pitches and said he could have thrown even more.

"I feel good," Prior reported. "The goal [on Tuesday] is to get through healthy -- hopefully, have a strong game, and evaluate after that."

Prior said that the first two starts were designed to see how he was feeling. The final two starts that he will be making in the Minors will be approached more like a regular-season game.

"More than anything, it's just about going out there and being able to compete without being a detriment to the team," Prior said of his rehabilitation. "It's about trying to get my pitch count up, so that I can go out there for an extended period of time."

I should have been more clear. It's the "whispers" part that bugs me. Like they're getting ready to start smearing him if it looks they want to run to him out of town for being "soft." I'm all for taking as long as it takes to get him back to fightin' form. I've stated numerous times they should shut down the idea of him coming to the bigs this year and just work at getting him to 100% for 2007 and beyond. He and Z need to be the pitching anchors.

I agree. When team sources start equating Prior's problems with Halladay's psycho-meltdown, there's a little too much organizational ass-covering going on for my taste.

Prior is getting his paychecks...all he and Wood care about.

Prior and Wood have both publicly expressed frustration with their constant need for rehab, and I have no doubts that your post is the complete opposite of the truth.
