While we're on this subject...

Is there any precedent for a GM being fired mid-season? I can't think of any.

Obviously plenty of managers have been canned during the year, but it seems to me that the front office shakeups almost invariably come in the weeks after the season ends.

So the folks that want Hendry's head will likely have to wait for October, at a minimum.

Ed Lynch "resigned" in the middle of a season.

I think the GM firings are mostly offseason moves. But there have been exceptions. Allard Baird was brought into KC in the middle of a season. The MacPhail Hendry turnover happened midseason (although that's not really the same). Cam Bonifay was fired midseason in Pittsburgh. Steve Phillip's predecessor was booted midseason. Detroit booted both their GM and manager very early in 2002.

I think part of this is due to the fact that GM's generally get more time than managers to begin with. Manager turover tends to happen much more frequently.

Instead of Hendry being "fired", perhaps the Trib can just "reassign" him to another position in the organization.

I vote LH batting practice pitcher.

Too bad I don't know Hendry's email addy, I would let him know EXACTLY how I feel.

Jim doesn't respond to e-mails.

Well tribune employee emails are;

first initial last name @tribune.com

I fired one off yesterday, while he did not respond, it also did not get bounced, and that is not to say it is manned, but I found it interesting that it did not bounce. I guess one could say, it is a publically traded company, and there is no reason not to have this kind of information available, especially if one would like to write or discuss scomthing with someone in this postion.

The right thing to do would be to resign.

There is absolutely no chance that Hendry is fired anytime before the end of the season, and probably no chance he's fired before calendar year 2008. It's unfortunate, but it's true.

There's probably a catch-all account. In other words, you could in theory send a message to "FireJimHendry@tribune.com", and it would not bounce.

FireJimHendry@tribune.com is not in the proper format. It would have to be:

FJimHendry@tribune.com.

Agreed. It's against the Trib's management philosophy of paying two people to do one job. And from a business standpoint, the Hendry era has been the most profitable, and the Cubs are a business first.

They've fired plenty of management types midseason and kept on paying them.

Why not just demote Hendry to an assistant GM position? I'd like to bring in someone fresh like Dayton Moore. Hendry can just be an advisor as he gets a little experience.

Hendry's been an assistant GM. That was his title before GM. I doubt he'd accept a demotion back to that. And I'm not sure I'd want him there. I don't like the idea of Hendry "advising" anyone.

We'll, if you demote him, and he doesn't like it; he'll resign. That way they don't have to pay him his contract.

Field managers yes, management no.

Possible silver lining: Hendry "decided he liked guys who catch the ball", maybe after witnessing the abomination of this year he'll decide he likes players that are actually good.

Only if the WS winner doesn't have some kind of quirky hook. Unfortunately most of them do just because it makes good copy. If the Cards win, and Ponson does anything, Hendry would probably try to find a fat, violent, (ex-)alcoholic starting pitcher to replace Wood and Prior.

IF (big if) Hendry were to be let go, who do you bring in as GM?

Would Gerry Hunsicker be interested?

3 words- Paul De Podesta

the only currently available guy whose philosophy i agree with. give him 5 years to develop a farm system full of patient ballplayers and we'll be a perrenial contender.

No way the Cubs would hire him though. Especially not after the high profile Dodgers experience. I just don't see it happening.

if they want to go cheap, depodesta would be the way to go, though. and i don't see why everyone says that he failed with the dodgers. he was given just over 2 years, not nearly enough time to draft and develop his own players.

they could give him an 80 mil payroll and tell him to make his own "luck".

No to Depodesta. He made stupid trades that ruined a team headed for the playoffs. If we are going to go the Moneyball route, we should go after Beane.

i'm not sure how they ruined his team, but guys like depodesta absolutely MUST be given at least 4 years.

what were his bad trades? because i'm not sure how they were so bad.

he got ripped for trading a vastly overrated paul loduca and an already-injured guillermo mota, but his trades weren't that bad.
