Sun Times article from today. If it is true, it is pretty sad.....

"All in the family? Sneed hears top Chicago Cubs executives Andy MacPhail and Jim Hendry berated Chicago Tribune sports editor Dan McGrath and Cubs beat writer Paul Sullivan over what they felt was the paper's unfairly critical coverage of the team. The expletive-laced tongue-lashing supposedly took place last week at Wrigley Field, according to a source."

Unfair and critical?

The toughest writing job in the world is the one where you are asked to say something nice about a team that gets shut out 5 times in 15 days and lays down bunts with 1st and 3rd with 2 outs in the 9th.

This is just MacPhail and Hendry worrying about what other people are doing instead of worrying about how they are going to fix this mess.

AND TONY WOMACK IS NOT A FIX!

give me a break. Once again, the front office is completely out of touch with reality. They're worried about was the papers are saying instead of trying to fix this abomination of a team they put on the field.

and people were surprised by how Alou and Mercker acted? Apparently this reaction is indoctrinated at the Welcome to the Cubs player orientation

At this point, Hendry has to be absolutely embarrassed about what he has done with this organization. And I really had high hopes for him. I really thought he had the potential to do some great things here.

Now, it's no accountability and a complete lack of understanding of how to put a good team on the field.

Why must we wait for him to be fired? Why hasn't he turned in his resignation?

Oh, that's right. Because the ink is still wet on that newly signed extension.

It's only natural, they're the architects of this mess.

Any criticism of the team is a criticism of them. It is pathetic, but I don't think it should be made a big deal of. The team and the paper are completely seperate entities.

Exactly.

I'd love to see Colangelo or Cuban take over this team.

I could care less about the detractors to such an idea. Yeah, like current ownership is doing such a great job----let's keep the status quo!

Maybe they yelled at Sullivan for his misguided criticism of the Cubs that focused on all the wrong things, and were telling him to be more like Miles (Bruce, not the bad guy from 24) and get to the heart of the matter. Or maybe they were mad at the Trib for all the "you can't blame it on Baker, nobody could win with this team stuff."

Sullivan is on the Score right now and said all four of them were not together, it was seperate tounge lashings. He said MacPhail got personal with him, but he was not going to elaborate. He said apparently the Cubs think that the writers " should be their house organ." He said I thought I got along with the both of them, until this happened. He said they thought he was "too harsh on Jacque Jones."

He said it was definitley the "weirdest beat he has ever covered." Also said that this meeting should have been kept private and doesn't know how it got in the Sun-Times. He intimated that MacPhail had Hendry haven't been happy with his whole career.

Is that sarcasm, goony?

Now that's pathetic. They probably buy that "just being aggressive" junk. It wouldn't be surprising, considering how they've never shown the least bit of awareness that overaggressive play has hurt them.

I cannot fathom that there is no one who has any clout in this organization who will say "Enough is enough" of this garbage and clean things up.

Perhaps a sweep by the Southside? Anything???

Time to send Sullivan off to Steve Stone land. Can't have these people criticizing the team.

I guess Marriotti gets a pass from Cub managemnet because he doesn't work for the Trib?

I wonder if Bruce has received any similar treatment from either Andy or Jim?

Bruce would stomp a mud hole in 'em if they did. :D

I haven't been happy with his whole career either, but for entirely different reasons.

That's just stunning. I cannot believe how screwed up this organization has become in 3 short years. I'm embarrased to be a Cubs fan right now. That's the kind of behavior that should never, ever happen.

They have no business telling the media what to report.

I thought the same thing.

Downey was critical in his column today as well. Is he going to be sent to the principal's office for a spanking too??

Kind of makes you think about that prospect's accusation about how Hendry treated him. Not to say Jim did ruin his career, but he comes across as a decent guy in most interviews, but it's coming out that he's much more of a jerk we might have thought.

Which may affect more aspects of his job than we realize. If he's a jerk, it can affect all manner of negotiations.
