Oh well the winning streak was great while it lastest. See you tomorrow guys!

I'm not sure one game = a streak

For this team it does!

Marshall is having one bad start. It's not a big deal. Maddux's last two starts were bad. We need somebody to replace Hill and Guzman. I think Marshall should stay in the rotation.

Well the good news is after letting up 5 runs in the 1st he did a decent job of limiting his pitch count, no?

And now, down 5, the aggressive school of hitting from Dusty, Sarge, and Clines will rear it's ugly ugly head.

I'm guessing 7 IP 63 pitches for Wright.

Fixed.

For the record, I have no problem with Murton batting in the 8th spot. I'm much more concerned with who is in the lineup rather than where they are, and Murton isn't doing anything against RHP anyway.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that I read that batting order is essentially meaningless.

That's overstating it just a bit. If you run today's lineup through a simulator, you'll see there's about a one-run difference between the best possible order and the worst possible order. However, no manager, not even one as inept as Dusty, will ever pencil in the worst possible batting order (ie, pitcher hitting first, etc).

Are you sure it's that much? It can be as much as a 2 run differential (if I understand you right)? I really don't recall the particulars of what I read and couldn't find anything doing a quick google search. Do you have a link?

I've got to go to a business meeting, but here's a nice toy to play with:

It's crude, but it gives you an idea of how much (or how little) batting order matters.

If you always bat in the first three spots in the order, won't you see a lot more ABs over the course of a season? Thus, don't you want your best (or one of your best) hitter(s) in those first three slots?

I must confess that this wasn't what I hoped to find when I began this investigation. I suppose the best-case scenario would have been to find a handful of counter-intuitive lineups that were significantly better than the traditional ones. As it was, the best lineup in the NL scored only 4.4% more runs than the worst, and in the AL the range was even narrower, as the best team scored only 2.4% more runs than the worst. And the difference between the best and the traditional lineup is negligible: in the NL it amounted to 0.38% more runs (or about 3 runs a season) and in the AL it was 0.24% more runs. These results seem to agree with the long-held belief that the ordering makes little difference.
