From ESPN insider:

May 10 - Although the Cubs had discussions with the Orioles about Kevin Millar trade, the North Siders prefer Jeff Conine because he is a better defensive outfielder, the Baltimore Sun reports.

I found that funny as well, at this stage, how much does OF defense matter?

You'd think at this point offense would be slightly more important. Apparently the cubs aren't scoring because of poor outfield defense.

That's like saying a team that is struggling with their pitching staff & is looking at two pitchers, but they prefer the one that is the better hitter.

Wow! Who to choose? Both are leaders. Both are winners. Conine led the young Marlins to a title. Millar brought together the untamed RedSox by getting them all to cowboy up and led them to a WS. When so much is similar...you gotta decide by defense. If you aren't scoring runs you may as well prevent them. Conine getting to those gappers faster will make the difference between a 6-1 and a 5-1 loss.

I wouldn't mind that thinking if they were debating on 2 good players. If the Cubs traded for Dontrelle over Clemens because Willis was a better hitter, then great. If the Cubs were deciding on Abreu or Giles and went with Bobby A's defense, then great. But this is Conine vs. Millar. That makes it worse. They know the offense needs help, but they seek out guys who can't hit.

Jones decides to get an error.

Personally, every missed cut-off man should be an error that allows a runner to advance.

Kinda made up for it.

Why not add both of them?

Millar is a good bench guy anyway. When Lee comes back, you have really good bench depth.

Send Bynum packing and send The Riot back down. You still have Neifi and Hairston to back up 2nd. Hairston can also play CF.

The cost would be the reason not to add both. I would have to be convinced the Cubs can contend this year before I add either. They aren't difference makers, they are role players. Bad teams don't trade prospects for role players.
