Man, the 2001 draft was great: Prior, Mauer, Teixeira, Wright, Gomes, Duke, Tracy, Crosby, Bonderman, Lowry, Sisco, Hardy, Haren, Howard, Youkilis...

The Cubs did a good job of drafting people that at least made it to the show, but I wish they had snagged some of the position players. :(

Montanez is 24 repeating AA. He's got a career line of .272/.342/.403 and that is only because of the numbers he put up in short season ball at 22 and low A ball at 23.

Isn't this statement contradictory considering he was in Low A at 23, yet is repeating AA? ;)

He spent roughly 2/3 of his season last year in Peoria and got bumped up to West Tenn, where he played 45 games.

Monty unfortunately qualifies as a bust because he flopped at SS and was not worth the money or the high draft pick it cost to get him. Then again, the first round of the 2000 Draft was absolutely putrid. Utley's the only one on that list who's a lock to be an All Star...the rest is up for grabs.

The later rounds got better: Grady Sizemore, Dontrelle Willis, Brandon Webb, Edwin Encarnacion, Garrett Atkins, Cliff Lee...

Hnedry hasn't been good, but I thought you guys were impressed with Harvey when the Cubs got him. It's real easy to second guess. Still, Hendry has a bad record. Doesn't he have to get lucky sometime?

How long has he been with this organization? The SCORE was commentating on how few Cub everyday players have panned out. Let's see:

Dunston

Grace

Carter

They said that Cedeno looks good but the Cubs have aterrible track record in the area. Much of the blame should go to Jim Hendry. I think the organization as a whole has a bad hitting philosophy.

Mel Hall was not great but he contributed.

Yeah, but there was a guy named Boof Bonser in the draft. You've gotta take that kinda thing into account, you know. I feel like it more than makes up for the inadequacy of the first round.

Heh heh. Boof Bonser.

Gotta give credit to the man who inspired the name of a terrific blog like Waiting for Boof. Granted, they changed the name...but still.

Lets face it - our draft record in the last 30 years smells. Until Scott Downs made it to the majors a few years ago, we hadn't produced a lefty starter since Moyer (IIRC). The position player issue speaks for itself, though we are forgetting some guys who are or were contributors (though not stars), such as Miguel Cairo, Alex Arias, Eric Hinske, Damon Berryhill, Jose Vizcaino, Rey Sanchez, and Doug Glanville, to name a few.

BTW, did you know we drafted pitcher Eric Montross (yes, the flat-head center from UNC who later played with Celts and several other NBA teams) in 1994?

Vizcaino wasn't a product of the Cubs' system. He came up through the Dodgers' system; the Cubs got him in a trade for Greg Smith after he had a couple of cups of coffee with the Dodgers.
