I'll never forget one of my younger Cub games I attended, and they announced Froemming as the second base umpire. Immediately I hear a "Aw NO, NOT FROEMMING!" behind me. The guy was right.

I have the same feelings whenever Angel Hernandez is anywhere on the field: especially behind the plate.

The difference between Froemming and Hernandez is that Froemming seems to have it out for the Cubs, but is reasonably competent against other teams. Hernandez is just the worst umpire on the planet, regardless of who is playing.

I still love the game where Mongo was in the booth during the 7th inning stretch of a game Hernandez was calling: "Don't worry Cubs fans, I'm gonna have a talk with that ump after the game." Hernandez subsequently threw him out of the park. I've loathed Hernandez ever since. Has Mongo ever been back to Wrig after that game?

That will remain for a very long time one of the 5 best games I've ever seen.

Mostly because it has the most awesome ending to a game ever (Gutierrez falling down coming around third and then scoring when the other dude got caught in a run down).

Also, just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that they arn't out to get me.

Too bad he tries to screw the Cubs, and drop anti-semitic phrases...

I've noticed he sucks as an ump on several occasions, but his bigotry is news to me. Since no one else asked, what is your source on this? Not to say you're lying, but that is a pretty severe charge. If true he should be kicked out of the league ASAP.

I think he may be refering to this:

Also toss Hunter Wendelstedt on the list of terrible umpires. Blech.

Who are the good umps that have consistent zones and don't actively antagonize players?

Tim McClellan and... Tim McClellan.

Speaking of him. I remember during a recent ESPN telecast they mentioned that McClellan was 97% spot on, on his strike zone according to k-zone the previous game he had worked. That is a very impressive %.

I noticed this line in the Trib article.

Froemming, in his 36th season as a major-league umpire, is retiring after this year.

Thank God!

Sorry Vance...in today's tribune, Froemming refutes that:

"Now in his 36th season of umpiring, Froemming said rumors of his retiring are false. He plans to continue in 2007, breaking umpire Bill Klem's all-time record for longevity."

Oh, goody!

Can we just let him call a game involving Delmon Young, please!

He was the homeplate ump at the Sosa corked bat game and the ump who threw George Brett out when his bat had too much pine tar on it.

And? He did what he had too do in both situations... the Brett pine tar thing was the correct call.

according to Pat and Ron, Maddux getting squeezed by Marsh.

tomorrow Hernandez, Sunday Hunter Wendelstadt.

Cubs will be fortunate to take one game this series.

I'm not suggesting anything. I'm just pointing out a strange coinicidence. The same umpire was involved in throwing out star players in two of the most infamous incidents in baseball history.

Wasn't it Froemming that made the call on Pappas (in the 9th) that ended his perfect game?

Sure was...

Even more signs of Froemming's arrogance was his quote afterwards defending his call, saying that there was only one person perfect in Wrigley that day, and that it wasn't Pappas.

Remember the Steve McMichael 7th inning stretch incident where he called out Hernandez for bad call in the previous inning. I say the CUBS have mongo do the 7th inning stretch every game he umps at Wrigley.

I remember that.

If you ever get a chance to see the replay, watch it.

There were two outs in the ninth inning, and a 2-2 count on the hitter, and Froemming called ball three (which was a strike, IMO). Ball four was debatable, as it was very borderline, but really, why would you even call that a ball? The way Pappas was throwing that day, it was just unbelievable that Froemming would squeeze the plate on him with two outs in the ninth inning.

Pappas went off on him, but luckily for Pappas, Froemming could not speak greek, so Pappas did not get booted. Even if Pappas said his peace in english, I don't believe it would have been right to kick him out. I mean really, the guy had a perfect game at Wrigley Field taken away from him. He did get the no-no, but still... a no-hitter with one walk with two outs in the ninth inning? What was up with that?

I've hated Froemming ever since.
