Rick Monday saves the flag. Hard to believe it was 30 years ago.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/deluca/cst-spt-deluca23.html

I remember watching the game. Jack Brickhouse was speechless at first because he wasn't sure what was going on. WGN cameras didn't catch all of the incident because they, too, were surprised by what happened. Monday was pretty shaken up. And though it wasn't mentioned in this article, I remember him saying why he did what he did. He said something to the effect of, "I've seen too many veterans who lost limbs or suffered burns defending the flag. I just couldn't stand by and watch someone burn it.

Pretty cool.

I saw that game. I remember Jack saying they weren't going to show replays because they didn't want to give the flag-burner the attention he was seeking.

If I recall, it was a game against the Dodgers. And it was during the upcoming offseason that Monday was traded to the Dodgers for Bill Buckner and Ivan DeJesus.

NSBB member JR had a picture of that in his signature a while back. I remember asking him to explain the story behind it, and he sent me a link to the story.

I usually just hang out and read what everyone has to say here at NSBB. It's nice to "get the goods" on the Cubbies without all of the troll trash you get with other boards. But this is one message that requires a reply. What an awesome story! I'm a life long Cub fan and have never heard that story before. I still have goose bumps after reading that. Thank you Cubfanintheknow for posting that and thank you Rick Monday for doing the right thing.

Great story!

there's a story about rick monday and the flag-burning game in one of the 2001 media guides that you can purchase when you get a scorecard. it was a really good interview with monday...i'll see if i can find it and possibly scan and post the article itself.

I remember that game very well. Never heard such a loud noice coming from the crowd. If Rick had been running for president at the time he would 've received 100% of the votes.

while it's stupid and pointless to burn the flag--and i certainly understand why monday did what he did--i don't understand why the symbol of the american flag provokes so much nationalistic idolatry.

yes, it's a cool story, but what certain forefathers fought and died for certainly cannot be summed up by a piece of 3-colored material.

if you want to burn a flag, fine, but it only makes you look foolish, and accomplishes nothing more than what people let you accomplish. when you burn the flag, you are no more burning a symbol of my history than some other inanimate object--and if you actually buy a flag just to burn it in front of people, you're not only wasting money, you're inviting a beating from some back-woods, tobacco chewing, 3-toed, superstitious trog, who has let a piece of cloth symbolize who he (or she, circumstances dictating) is--similar to not stepping on a crack for fear of breaking their proverbial mother's back.

now, if some evil idiot would drag an 85 year-old WWII veteran out there and try to light him on fire, than i'd say swarm and kill the jerk. but all some moron and his indoctrinated little bratt of a kid need is a senseless beating from security and maybe a kick to the groin for endangering the on-field entertainment of the day.

great save, monday--especially because a new flag can go for some serious money on the open market--but that's really all it's worth. next time, save me a corn dog or something.

You wouldn't.

I was just reading about Rick Monday and was gonna post it here.

I believe the Houston Astros are doing something to honor him.

Politics aside, I'm surprised the Cubs aren't doing something at the game tonight ....seeing as he was a Cub then....maybe they are...

They showed a video clip of this while the cubs were playing the Dodgers. I Tivoed all the games, If I still have them, and can figure out how to upload to a computer...Well I'll try.

You wouldn't.

of course not, because marxists have never erected idols, engaged in idol-worship or nationalism.

i don't see what me being a marxist has anything to do with this. but leave it to some sort of almost superstitious hatred of anything non-capitalist to spark hatred in someone speaking without knowing.

I was a ten-year-old kid in Central Indiana who didn't have cable television. So, my dad and I would often sit in his car in the driveway listening to the Cubs because we could pick up WGN better on that radio than any others. I often would go sit in his car alone and listen, which is what I was doing that day. Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau described the scene for me and I went in and told my dad right away.

I also remember seeing Monday on The Mike Douglas Show shortly thereafter talking about the incident.

If you go to dodgers.com there's a link to the video of it and Vin Scully's audio call.

Thank you for that, saved me a ton of time.

The Astros are doing something because the Dodgers are in town, as is Monday since he's their radio color guy, and today is the 30th anniversary. LA did something on Sunday, which was the last day of their homestand.

I remember that very well as well. I was 11 at the time and about 2 years into becoming a huge Cub fan thanks to a love of baseball, summers and WGN.

I always liked Rick Monday - I remember writing his name in black marker on my first ever baseball glove :)
