News: Pena has a clause in the minor league contract he signed with the Yankees that allows him to become a free agent by May 2nd if the Yankees haven't added him to their active roster, the Booth Newspapers report.

Looks like if the Cubs are interested, they are gonna have to wait it out until next week.

That might be ok with the Cubs, maybe the Walker at 1st thing is a trial period. What can be said for acquiring a 2B instead of 1B?

Adam Kennedy figures to be on the move at some point this year, with Howie Kendrick moving in.

And of course there's Soriano.

If first baseman Carlos Pena isn't promoted from Columbus by May 2, he will become a free agent and likely sign with the Cubs, who are looking for help after losing Derrek Lee. . . .

Granted, this quote is from a NY newspaper, and thus, has little credibility :)

Tuesday will be interesting...

More of the same today.....

The Yanks have until tomorrow to promote first baseman Carlos Pena from Columbus or risk losing him as a free agent.

If he isn't brought up, the left-handed hitting Pena is likely to sign with the Cubs.

I hope that the Cubs are all over this if he wasn't called up today....

...though looking at Pena's stats in triple A...he's only slugging .308 with zero home runs.

...so I'm not sure that Pena would do any better than Sing. Sing is starting to see the ball batter. Yesterday he had a home run and a double. He blamed his early season struggles on severe allergies, which I can attest can be debilitating.

He's going to have to do a lot better than that. Even Jacque Jones had 3 hits one game.

ESPN says (via usa today) that he chose to remain at AAA for the Yanks. I don't get it.

He has a TV, and he has watched the Cubs. A very intelligent man.

OR, he knows his value his at its lowest so it wouldnt be the best time for him to become a FA...he'll play in the minors with the Yanks until he heats up and they'll either call him up or he'll ask to be released.

I believe the Yanks are giving him more than a mil to hang out in Columbus. Maybe the Cubs didn't offer enough coin for him to leave.

i would rather keep that million and play the Neifury at 2b instead of Pena. He is a lifetime .243/.330 player with a good glove.

We need offense not more trouble.

that .330 is still .03 better than neifi's .300 career obp not to mention the power he provides. There is no question that the offense of Pena/Walker is greater than the offense of Walker/Neifi. That said, it doesn't sound like he is going to be a Cub.

But Arizona has Jackson, Green, and Tracy who can all play some first base, pretty much making Tony Clark a very expensive redundant player. But, I don't think Ari would do it less then a solid young reliever, perhaps a 5th starter.

Tony Clark is very inexpensive. Around $1M for 2006.

He does have a NTC though.

But what do we do with Clark when Lee comes back? Clark can only play 1b, and he's not going to get much time with Lee in front of him. Doesn't seem to be a fit for the Cubs IMO.

The Cubs need a 1B, for the next 2 months. How's that not a fit?

And when Lee is back, then Clark takes a seat on the bench next to guys making even more than him (Hairston, Mabry, Neifi, Blanco).

I MEANT to say....that Clark would be a redundant player for ARIZONA, not Chicago. Of course, I think he is a fit for the Cubs.
