... is not the fact that two of our best pitchers (plus Miller) are rehabbing from injury.

No, it is Juan Pierre. What an incredible disappointment so far. I had high hopes that this "spark plug" would really energize the offense. I was at Great American Ballpark for opening day and saw his lead-off triple. However, it has been downhill from there.

This evening, in the eighth, with the Cubs desparately needing a run, he leads-off the inning. This is why we got him...he supposed to get on base somehow, wreak havoc, maybe steal a base, and score the second run that ties the ballgame. Instead he grounds out weakly (to the pitcher, I thinkg - but I might be getting this out confused with one of his other weak at-bats...).

I'm really concerned. Am I over-reacting? Will he improve? Or, do we need to start getting on the Pie bandwgn...

It's only been ten games. If he consistently performs this way to the end of July then I would say he's a disappointment.

Maybe, and most likely he will. However, you have a guy like Murton (or Murton more specifically) who is definitely showing he should play 9 inn (good for you Dusty) every game.

Pierre, at the very least will come around to last year's sub-par #'s; but if Mr. Murton continues to get quality AB's he will help the OF production immensely.

Only my opinion,

I think right now you are overreacting. We haven't played two weeks of games yet. If he is still hitting .214 at the end of April, then we should be concerned. Let's give him a little more time to turn it around.

i really haven't liked Pierre so far. He swings at so many bad pitches just to put the ball in play...it drives me nuts.

It is early and I don't think anybody has been pleased with Pierre's play so far. But let's give him the chance to turn it around.

That's why I said so far. I really think he'll turn it around, I just didn't realize how often he swings at bad pitches.

Yes, you're overreacting, but I share the same concern. His year last year leads me to believe this is the 'new' Pierre. Yes, I'm sure he'll improve, but how much?

AND DO NOT RUSH PIE TO THE MAJORS. I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH.

It's only been two weeks - players go through hot and cold streaks longer than that. Remember that Neifi was a decent hitter for a whole month last year.

Fact is, Neifi was a lot more than decent for about 4 months........

Man, if he did that in 313 ABs, how bad were the other 259 ABs for him to end up with a .298 OBP and .681 OPS?

Looks like for the remainder of the year (257 ABs), he hit .169 with 1 home run, 13 RBI and 8 BBs.

Talk about hot and cold....

When Neifi's "on", he's as good an option as you've got, even for the top of the order.

Perez AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS

09/08 - 10/02 90 6 19 4 0 0 23 5 3 6 0.211 0.234 0.256 0.490

But when he's off, he's not even a good option to run down to the 7-11 for more toothpicks !!

This is a legitimate concern. I had these concerns when they traded for him. If he somehow reverts back to his .360+ OBP from 2004 and back, he's an asset. If he provides the .326 OBP he put up last year, we traded 3 prospects and paid 6m for Tom Goodwin's twin.

But, I would agree that it is too early to tell how he'll be this year.

Pierre is not a selective hitter. He rarely walks. But, he also rarely strikes out. But, a lot of his OBP is derived from infield hits, something he hasn't had much luck with so far this year.

It's too early, but Pierre helped contribute to the first three runs of today's game by rattling the pitcher.

the pitcher was scared of pierre in the dugout so he let todd walker hit a home run?

Worthless stats.......

CUBS are 5-1 when Todd Walker hits a home run while the opposing pitcher is afraid of Juan Pierre's scary ogre mask

when the opposing pitcher is afraid of Juan Pierre's scary ogre mask

Pierre did have a good game, but he would have scored with or without his speed.

Pierre led to the first run, but not the 2 run HR from Walker. Well, I guess if Pierre had made an out instead of singling and then successfully stealing 2B, Walker wouldn't have come up to bat in the 2nd (much less Ramirez, who drove in Pierre and scored a run on Walker's blast). I guess Pierre contributed to the first three runs by 1) scoring one of them, 2) bothering the pitcher while on base, 3) scoring a run, and 4) not making an out so Walker could come up to the plate.

Well put, Meat. Good analysis of Pierre's contribution to the Cubs scoring in the first inning. I guess he didn't have to scare the pitcher from the dugout in order to make a difference in Walker's at bat. Walker likely wouldn't have had an at bat if it weren't for Pierre and the rest of the guys. Got to love first inning runs, especially on the road.

That's okay. It was a first inning run on the road. They are twice as important!
