There is no way we can put together a package good enough to land Abreu without seriously hurting ourselves.

Our abundance of pitchers from a few years ago had most of the prospects either get traded away in other deals, or not live up to their potential. We have the arms to get him, but then it would take a while to build it back up again.

Don't get me wrong, I would love Abreu, I just don't think we can get him.

Besides, Abreu is 32. He maybe has five good/decent years left in him. Some of the prospects we'd trade, should they pan out, would have 10-15.

It's as if these GM's didn't get enough flak over bad contracts. Now, it's "thank you, may I have another?"

Thank you, sir. May I please have another?

would anyone trade top of the line talent to land Geoff Jenkins? how about Cliff Floyd? both were about as productive as Abreu last year.

Abreu is a fine player. would love to have him. however, I don't think it is wise to chase a 32 year old outfielder whose OPS+ plummeted 26 points last year and has a big fat wad of cash coming to him next year. at the very least, its not wise to get hyped about him until you see if he'll rebound.

if a deadline deal is made, there are much better options out there, especially because Philly would ask too much (ie. you could probably land Cabrera for slightly more than Philly will ask for Abreu)

Abreu's poor season was only in the second half, where it was documented he had marital troubles. If he performed to the level he has previously in the first half I wouldn't worry about taking him on.

I didn't know that, but I went at looked at his splits. I guess the wife's attorney was being a nice guy in August, then got mean again in September.

If Jones flames out completely, you know what I'd rather do than chase Abreu?

What do the Mets need? Since they apparently have no intention of actually playing Victor Diaz, I'd see what it'd take to pry him away.

I like Diaz but I don't think he is a difference maker. He is also a guy without a position. They've tried him everywhere and he has stunk it up in the field.

I do think he is a Chicagoan though.

Isn't he the guy that hit the killer HR against us in 2004 late in the year? The one that tied the game in the bottom of the ninth?

In mid-September in Shea off of LaTroy?

Yeah, that's him.

It was a Saturday afternoon game on FOX.

I was there too. So was CT. Prior pitch a hell of a game and Alou hit into two double plays. That was the day the Cubs started their decent.

It wouldn't be surprising if Abreu became available, but I think Hendry will make another run at Tejada. Baltimore needs lots of help. Might as well trade Cedeno & Pie before they go the way of Choi, Patterson, Hill & DuBois.

With as well as Cedeno is playing, I don't see a move for Tejada upcoming.

Our biggest need will be a corner outfielder. Shortstop will not be a target.

Agreed. I would say that Jones is the only one that we would need to replace. Murton and Cedeno are both on the way up whereas Jones isn't.

Philly has come out the gates 9-14 and are either 6 or 7 back of NY already. Can see Abreu being available. Am guessing Philly will want pitching. What would you guys give up?

I'd be willing to part with Glendon Rusch.

Abreu just recently had a 13-game walk streak snapped. He would make too much sense for the Cubs. His 2nd half slide of 2005 is history, he's putting up the best numbers of his career so far.

Unfortunately, I think it would take giving up Matt Murton or Felix Pie and plenty of pitching. I wouldn't give up Pie for 1.5 years of a 33 year old, and I'd hate to give up cheap productive talent in Murton. But he would probably go because he would be relegated to the bench, as Jones isn't going anywhere.

I'd say; Murton, Hill/Marshall, and a minor league pitcher (of the Holliman, Shaver, Johnson caliber)

You think Burrell would accept moving to RF???

Isn't RF considered more prestigious or difficult than LF? I would think that would be like a promotion.

True, but he's played LF for quite some time and is probably quite comfortable in LF. Sounds like he has the arm for RF tho. Just depends on his ego & attitude, I guess.

I'd probably make the Phillies an offer of Marshall, Ryu or Hill, and Scott Moore or Ryan Harvey provided they take Jacque Jones as well.

For Burrell, or Abreu?

Abreu.

I have the feeling that if the Phillies are under .500, Gillick will want to re-make the team and rid himself of the financial commitment to Abreu. He'll need pitching and depending on how they pitch from now until July, Marshall could have a lot of value to a team like the Phillies.

I don't think the Phillies consider the deal now, but if Marshall continues to show excellent poise and gets and keeps his ERA under 4, I think he will have a tremendous amount of value to teams looking for pitching.

I'd bet they're more likely to take Rusch than Jones. Doubt Philly wants to touch two more years of Jones. Some other teams might tho.

That would really depend on Marshall's perceived value at the time. Since they'd be saving money by getting Marshall an unloading the 15+ million payments to Abreu, they'd still be saving significant money.

There is no way Philly can get anything near equal value for Abreu. If Philly continues to slide out of contention (WC too) by June. I'd see what Philly wants.

I'd give them Jones and pay at least half his salary. I also think that he could become a free agent at the end of the year if he is traded in the middle of a multi-year contract, but I'm not sure about that.

I also give them a pick of any two of Guzman, Marshall, and Hill.

Jones for half price (for one year if I'm correct) and two cheap #2/3 starters is more than enough for Abreu plus his huge contract.

If they want Pie, no deal. Pierre won't play for the Cubs next year, if he continues at his current level of production.
