juan "robes"pierre.

i think frostwyrm coined that one and as far as i know, nothing else has come close.

Damn, that is a classic

Wish I had come with that one.

I remember this one, and it is clearly the best option. Not that it is in any way related to the actual player (although I do enjoy envisioning Pierre as a crazed, tyrranical, murderous frenchman).

I am an idiot. When I saw the "robes"pierre note I thought of Robeson.

Robespierre is probably one of the more famous figures from the French Revolution, but whatever.

OK, took a while but I get it now. An obscure reference to someone from the 18th century isn't all that funny in my book.

I agree. Not funny.

Yeah, one of the more famous figures from the French Revolution, but not the most famous. If the discussion was about politics, history, the current protests in France, revolution in general, or change in government leadership, then it's not obscure.

I call him Juan Pierre

I'm very much in favor of not having to nickname the 25-roster (plus minor leaguers). I've gone on record ranting several times about dusty's insistence on adding -ie or -y to everyone and anyone. Juan is fine by me.

The only figure from the French Revolution that I can think of who's maybe more famous than Robespierre is Danton, and they're pretty much on the same level as far as I can tell (unless you count the Scarlet Pimpernel). But it's probably just the nerd in me (which constitutes no small part, I admit) that thinks this is funny. So for everyone who doesn't think this is funny, I totally get ya. But I still think it's far and away the best nickname I've heard for any baseball player, let alone just Pierre (maybe because it's obscure and totally irrelevant).

At this time I would like to formally take all the credit or blame for nicknaming Juan.

I remember it well and it was very controversial at the time. As some though I was disparaging his play.

I coined both "Slappy" and "Slap Nasty". In the imortal words of Daffy Duck it is all mine. Mine, mine, mine.

This may go down as my one and only claim to fame.

What an unremarkable achievement on my part.

Do you happen to have a link to that? If I recall, there were some pretty good ones in there for both Juan and Murton.

No. I have no idea how to use the search properly but it was in transactions, I believe. I also had it in my signature for a while. There was a quote from Slap Nasty to the effect that what he does doesn't always show up in the box score, but it is important nonetheless.

I had totally forgotten about the "Robes" Pierre idea. Maybe it is a little off base for an athlete, but it works for history geeks like me. I don't get "Slap Nasty" at all. If you want to go that direction why not just "Slappy"? I like that one.

Other people age. Juan Pierre just gets younger. No roids here... Just look at his home run power

I loved the intensiity that Pierre showed yesterday. As soon as he hit the ball he took off and he sprinted the whole darn way. And when he made it to third he gave a huge fist pump which was an unbelievable way to start out the season.

Since all Frenchmen are chefs and Pierre is a French name, I say we call him the chef cause he is always cookin up something at the top of the order.
