We got something for Welly that could potentially benefit us someday.

Good trade I say, some team would have just waited to see how long we were willing to let him rot on the 25 man getting an inning every few weeks, and grabbed him for free when we sent him down.

I can't wait for Lincoln Holdzkom and Rubby Perez to come out with their first joint CD. This is the beginning of a beautiful partnership.

I did find this of interest, especially
Drafted in the seventh round in 2001, Holdzkom signed for $105,000 after getting kicked off the baseball team at Arizona Western Junior College. He believes he would have gone much higher if not for clashing with his college coach. While his nipple rings and seven tattoos sometimes give people the wrong impression, Holdzkom is devoted to his craft.

*Sigh*

I really liked welly. i'll never forget his Minor league debut. That was amazing. Too bad he's been off and on since then. As far as the quality of this move goes, i put this officially in the "meh" file.

Geez, it seems like we got more for Wellemeyer than we did for Patterson. Yuck.

I don't know about that, as Wellemeyer didn't exactly net us a king's ransom. Two 24 year-old relievers who have yet to make it out of A ball don't exactly get my blood pumping, particularly when one hasn't had much professional success and the other has already had major arm surgery. Patterson didn't get us a pair of top-flight prospects, mind you, but at least Spears had decent performances at age-appropriate levels.

Holdzkom when he was healthy was throwing in the high 90s regularly, as he regains strength from TJS he may very well end up being quite a steal...age is his obstacle.

And, of course, one thing to keep in mind with his age and the fact that he hasn't pitched over high-A, is that he missed a season and a half recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Whereas the injury history is a minus, it is important to remember that while he may have just turned 24, (his birthday is March 23rd) he would likely have been in AAA this season if it weren't for the injury. As it stands, he may still pitch in AAA at some point this season depending on how he does. He will likely start at Daytona or West Tenn, but who knows where he will end up the year. I'm guessing his control will dictate how high he climbs. In that sense, the Cubs may have traded Wellemeyer for a 3-year younger version of himself.

I like this trade for everyone involved...

Wellemeyer wasn't going to get his shot with the Cubs, he's better than a 13th pitcher on a staff and is better off on another team than the Cubs.

Holdzkom, could be a steal depending on how well he has recovered from TJS to go with his upper 90s FB he had a very good curve. He might end up being the northside version of Bobby Jenks, both have great arms, noted for poor work ethics, been thru TJS, possible weight issues, and not inside the box mentally.
