Well, Dusty didn't exactly give Grissom a ringing endorsement in this morning's papers. And Grissom himself didn't exactly sound like a player confident in his ability to give 100% for an entire season.

Angel Pagan would be a welcome addition to this team. He's played well this spring training and he certainly deserves to be given a shot.

Grissom has done nothing to show that he will be productive this year.

In the Sun times this morning they mentioned if Grissom doesn't make the team there might be a chance for Theriot to make it.

I think the only way Theriot makes the team out of spring training is if Walker is traded.

I'd rather have Restovich, who's also had a nice spring and adds some unique abilities to the bench, namely right handed power.

Pagan is hitting .360 this spring, and according to Dusty is a switch hitter...I'm sure Restovich could be a solid player but my vote would be for Pagan at this point.

If Grissom doesn't make the cut don't we have two roster spots open?

Spring training performance means very little, Pagan has over 2000 minor league PA's that he hasn't been able to do anything with, especially hit for power. Restovich on the other hand, has much better past performance to go with his strong spring, and there's no one(like Hairston in Pagan's case) that makes his presence on the roster redundant.

Guys who get the 25th roster spot on a team usually aren't top prospects. I like Pagan. I think he'll be better than Macias and thus an improvement.

Restovich is 27. Neither are top prospects, they're both failed high draft picks. Both have had strong springs, Restovich's career makes him more likely to continue to have success, and his abilities are not already present on the bench like they are with Pagan.

I like Restovich too, why can't we keep both?

Blanco, Hairston, Perez, Mabry are all taking up bench spots. If we're going with 12 pitchers then only one can be kept.

I thought they were going with 11 this year?

I alos remember reading that the Cubs were going with 11 pitchers and not 12.

Restovich is hitting .257 with 2 HR and 1 2B 5 RBI in 35 AB

Pagan is hitting .360 with 3 HR 3 2B and 6 RBI in 25 AB

Pagan also has 3 SB to Restovich's 1

Just thought I'd throw the stats in here.

Of course these are only through the 23rd (from rotowire) so Im missing 4 games of stats.

Angel Pagan is going to get the Ron Santo/Billy Williams Rookie of the Spring Award, which is voted on by people including the players. If the players think he deserves that, I would imagine there are going to be some unhappy campers if he's left off the team.

If it came to just one guy, with guys like this who are fighting harder than anybody to get a major league job, I'll take the guy who performing at a high level over the guy with so-so stats. It means something to me that he put the work in and played his way on.

11 pitchers

8 position players

leaves a 6 man bench as:

Walker

Mabry

Perez

Blanco

Pagen

Grissom/Theriot/Restovich

IMO, if Grissom wants to play, he's in. If not, they'll keep The Riot.

Dusty said yesterday that they're starting the season with 11 pitchers, but that's only because they're going to be carrying 4 starters. He's still going to have 7 relief pitchers when they break camp.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on them carrying 12 once they call up that 5th starter. That last position spot may just be temporary.

Of course, they could use the 5th starter out of the bullpen before then, but that wouldn't really make any sense. But that could still happen.

Pagan making it over Grissom is fine by me. But pretending Pagan's spring is in anyway indicative of what he's capable of in the regular season is just plain unrealistic. Spring training results, especially ones that are out of line with career numbers, are meaningless.

Assuming Hairston is the starter and 2nd and Walker is still around, I'd like to see the bench like this:

Blanco

Neifi

Walker

Mabry

Pagan

Restovich

The IF is covered, the OF is covered. Walker is a good LH bat. Mabry might be a decent LH bat. Restovich is your only RH threat.

With 4 starters the first couple weeks, there is no need to even consider using 12 pitchers. Once the 5th starter gets his first action mid-month, you should be fine with 6 relievers. Any time you need an extra arm you call somebody up from AAA and send down whichever kid gets the nod. If Ryu is the long man out of the pen to start the season, he can go to AAA if/when Marshall or Guzman gets called up for 5th starter duty.
