He's always done poorly in spring training, turning it on in the last week or so.

Then promptly turning it off for the next 6 months.

not that it should...but does anyone think that Corey's not so glorious departure from Chicago will have a negative effect on how Eric Patterson views the Cubs?

I'm much more embarassed about the way Cubs fans treated Corey than the Cubs.

If you can't guess, I probably can't explain why.

Why?

It's similar to what has popped up in this thread with people wishing Corey nothing but the worst. People were pretty much exactly like this while he was a Cub almost because these people seemed like they had a vendetta against him. People say he doesn't hustle, that he doesn't try, that he doesn't care, that he was a jerk towards the fans. Somehow, this all justified the heaps of booing that fans laid on him most of last season.

The thing is, it shows a lack of class.

Corey always struck me as a guy who didn't show any emotion on the field and kept it all internal. I don't remember him ripping fans or teammates in the media. He seemed like he wanted to succeed, but for whatever reason, things could never click for him mentally. Most people on this board who attended spring training also said that Corey was among the nicest players on the field, always stopping to sign autographs well beyond the time most player took off for their tee time. He deserves criticism, but having the fans try to boo the guy off the field was just taking it too far.

What bothers me about all of this are the exact same fans who rip on Carlos Zambrano for basically the exact opposite reasons. Zambrano shows too much emotion. He gets too intense on the mound and lets things get to him. He overthrows and tries too hard. He shows up teammates and umpires on the field. Granted, he is incredibly talented and productive. Were he talented but not productive, something tells me he might well be in the same boat as Corey.

There are very few instances I can think of when fans can be justified in booing a player on their favorite team. I don't think Corey really fulfilled any of those instances during his time with the Cubs.

I wish Corey nothing but the best with the Orioles.

Do you think so? I haven't searched back or anything. It seems to me that it's different fans who have gripes with Z vs. past 'grievances' with CP. People seemed to be mad because Corey didn't 'improve' vs. people being mad about Z improving but not containing his emotions. But I certainly could be wrong about that.

As do I.

Booing the home team is not a new thing for Cubs fans. It's been going on for decades. Corey was one of the most recent targets.

There are all sorts of Cubs fans. Some optimistic, some pessimistic, some love Wrigley, some want to rip it down and build a new ballpark in the burb, some go to games, some follow each game long-distance no matter what, some boo what they don't like, some cheer regardless of what happens.

I didn't boo Corey, but I am glad he has a new team now and can focus on playing his game.

I totally agree but I also have to say Corey's refusal to play winter ball merits a few boos next time he plays at Wrigley, if he ever does. That actually did get me a little angry at him. Other than that I have no problem with him as a person.

Well, I booed Corey once it was clear that he wasn't going to turn things around no matter what. I did so to express to Dusty that I didn't want to see him in the lineup and to Hendry that I didn't want to see him on the team. However, I would have loved to see him do well with the Cubs, but there was a point last summer, after watching him swing like a blind man for months, that it just wasn't going to workout for him with the Cubs. I do hope he becomes a great player with the Orioles or whoever, and I won't be the least bit bitter if he does. If that makes me one of the embarassments, so be it.

I guess I was lumping in Cubs fans with the Cubs in my question...That was basically my premise. I figure Eric might not think too much of Cubs Nation (I hate it when people say "Cubs" or "Sox" or whatever nation..oh well) after how his Big Brother was treated. I know I wouldn't.

I just feel that if you put up numbers as horrible as Corey did in 2005 you haven't earned the right to say no if your team asks you to play winter ball. I would have nothing but goodwill for Corey if he had played winter ball as requested.

I still have goodwill for Corey. I just don't think he's panning out as a baseball player, that's all. Maybe I'm wrong.

Its as simple as "if you dont' perform you might get booed." It is not a new concept in sports or to the Cubs. On top of Corey's problems, he continued to do the same things that made him a failure in the first place (like always swing at the first pitch, swing at a fastball above his head, etc. ).

Corey may have been the nicest guy in the world, but there is nothing embarrasing about a team's fanbase expressing displeasure with a player that is not performing. It happens all of the time and it is part of the package. I'm sure that if Corey would have put together a great year, the same people booing him would have been cheering him the loudest.

I hope that Corey does great with the Orioles, too. But I don't feel the least bit sorry for him, he is a big boy.

Doesn't this say a lot?

Boo the team when they play poorly as a group if you insist and think you're accomplishing something by booing. But picking out one guy and booing him mercilessly, before he even gets to the plate, as his name in announced before the game, during every single pitch of every single game is just plain stupid.

Booing is an emotional reaction. No one thinks it accomplishes anything.

It's an emotional reaction when you boo a bad play that just happened. It's a premeditated act of immaturity when you boo the name being announced in the starting lineup, or as the player strides to the plate or after every move me makes.

Did you guys cheer Todd Hundley and Lenny Harris too?

i didn't go out of my way to boo them before they even did anything on the field.

So you never booed them before an AB?

No, why would anybody who wants the Cubs to succeed boo one of their players before he bats? It's absurd.

I can't stand seeing Neifi Perez in a Cubs uniform, let alone at the plate. But I'm not going to boo his worthless butt, I'm going to hope he does something to help the team.
