Please note that, despite how the link reads, the player returned is Juan Mateo, not Julio.

Is he any good?

He had real good numbers last season, but I saw him a few years ago in one game and he was completely unimpressive. Small sample size, plus he could have improved.

Considering it was the Cardinals, it's not surprising a deal couldn't be worked out. The Cardinals wouldn't have wanted to give the Cubs anything useful and the Cubs would have no incentive to allow the Cardinals to keep a player that they think could help them in the future.

No surprise.

According to the USAToday spring training stats, Mateo ended up pitching in only two exhibition games, and didn't even compelte two full innings.

However, he was perfect in his brief attempts, retiring all five batters that he faced.

Hopefully Mateo is an interesting prospect with a good arm, but just came to camp too late and too out of shape to give himself a chance to get a spot. I hope he pitches well for the Cubs.

Mateo won't pitch for the Cubs. Chances are he'll be dealt for ptbnl or he'll leave as a 6 yr FA whenever that is.

I agree.

The odds on the Cards and the Cubs working out a deal for a rule 5 guy that can't stick must be astronomical.

I doubt Mateo would have been the player that prevents the Cubs and Cards from working out a deal. Chances are...the Cards did NOT like what they saw from Mateo and we all too glad to return him to the Cubs.

Not according to the Cardinals per mlb.com.

One pitcher who no longer figures into the mix is right-hander Juan Mateo, selected from the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft in December. La Russa and other club officials acknowledge that Mateo will not be on the team.

That does not mean, however, that Mateo will not be in the organization. La Russa characterized Mateo as being "in limbo" on Wednesday. The Cardinals are trying to find a way to keep him in the organization without keeping him on the 25-man Major League roster. To do so they would likely have to work out a trade with the Cubs.

Well, in that case, the Cubs have to make sure that no deal is worked out.

I doubt that. Mateo showed up late---I believe due to visa problems---and he showed up overweight, and got into LaRussa's doghouse from the begining. So I seriously doubt Mateo would had been a player the Cards would want to keep, not when they could get $25,000 back from the Cubs.

I can imagine this conversation:

Jocketty: We like this Mateo kid. Who do you want?

Hendry: Can Pujols play right field? Hello?
