What really seems funny about this is that Hendry did the talk show rounds Sunday and was quoted several times as saying Kerry looks and feels great, blah blah blah.

And now he needs knee surgery. That doesn't just happen overnight. Either he hurt it recently and there was no annoucement, or the Cubs knew all along he'd be behind schedule with his shoulder, and also knew he needed a knee scope, so they delayed it in order to mask the shoulder delay, to avoid being hammered for waiting to have his shoulder operated on last summer....

What a bloody mess. The Cubs really are a very misleading organization from top to bottom.

It sounds like this is on Wood more than Hendry and Company. They have no idea if he's going to just pitch through some mild discomfort and then finally come to the trainer after the damage has been done. You know he didn't say anything right away b/c he just wants to pitch.

Has there ever been a bigger waste of talent? I don't think so.

Thank God for the signing of Wade Miller, once he's ready, I'd give him the job regardless of how Wood is. He's long worn out his welcome, ship him off for a bag of baseballs.

People, stop freaking out about minor arthroscopic knee surgery. It's got a 2-3 week recovery time. Everyone gets it nowadays. it's vogue.

When he starts having problems with his arm again, then you should freak out.

It's a beautiful thing. I've had a few. I have gone from not being able to walk or straighten out my knee to 100% in the span of 10-14 days. I love it.

Sure, it'll set him back a couple of weeks, but it's not the end of his career (yet).

But Seth, the point is that he's not going to be throwing while his knee is healing. This torpedoes any shot of him being ready in April. Adding 3 weeks to an already vague timetable for return isn't good.

Does this just cover new problems, or can we freak out when old problems don't go away?

Then you would think Wood would be smart enough to know when to say something to the trainers.

Meh. it'll let him do upper body drills and ease off on the "throwing off the mound to show everyone he's alright" crap. I wasn't planning on him being ready for April anyway.

The part that really sucks is that this is a ready-made excuse for the Cubs brass when asked why Wood didn't get shut down earlier last year. "he woulda made it in time for the start of the season if it wasn't for that knee cleanup." Don't buy that argument when you read it later.

That's not rational.

This is frustrating, and symptomatic of the Cubs incompetent handling of medical situations.

But does it change anything? Frankly, if you were thinking Wood was pitching in the bigs in April, it's your own fault. There's been enough hints to suggest we should be happy to see him in May. Would this procedure delay that? Probably not. It's early March. He can take a week off and resume throwing. Hopefully stretching out by mid-April, getting some minor league starts in late April, and finally ready for the bigs in May.

Yes this makes the Cubs look bad (it doesn't matter if it's Wood's "fault", they all have trust issues with health), but it probably doesn't change a thing as it pertains to Wood pitching in 2006.

It is tiring but he wasn't supposed to be ready for the beginning of the season anyway. So now he's recovering from two injuries at the same time instead of one. And its better that this happen now instead of in August. Although, now that I think about it, he'll probably have another injury then anyway so it really doesn't matter. Oh well.

How so? Wood didn't tell them anything until a couple of days ago and then all he said was he had some discomfort. They did an MRI pretty much immediately then talked about what to do. It was a three-day turnaround. I don't see how this is symptomatic of anything.

I don't buy the Cubs' story of injury timelines, ever.

The difference between their story and the truth can be quite large. Regardless, even if this is legit, their history makes it next to impossible to expect people to trust them, so this instance just adds to the problem.

Great, but your feelings are completely irrelevant to the discussion. How is this situation symptomatic of a problem? Unless you can prove they're lying, they announced this after following the proper steps.

His feelings are not at all irrelevent. The discussion is very much about how the Cubs handle injury problems and how trustworthy they are with laying out timelines. They brought on the mistrust themselves with the constant contradictions and overall poor handling of injuries. It doesn't matter if this particular situation was legit or not, it falls within the pattern of past discrepencies.

I had Arthro 2 and 1/2 weeks ago to remove the back of my kneecap, some old scar tissue and some cartilage. I went to the gym today and ran, not jogged, but ran.

I was feeling pretty good about all that until I got home and read this.

The difference is, I don't have an entire team/medical staff around me telling me to take it easy because I am an investment not a person. It seems with the Cubs, we get "2-4 weeks" which inevitably turns into 2-4 months.

Very frustrating indeed.

Why in the world would the Marlins trade Willis? They had this firesale to keep Willis and Cabrera.
