Bruce Miles has a nice article out today on Murton.

While Baker speaks complimentary of Murton in the article, this quote has me nervous.

Baker said he has no preconceived games-played total for Murton, saying it would be based on performance, but that “I’ve got to give him a chance, an opportunity to play.”

I'm worried that if Murton starts slowly, Baker could insert Mabry or Grissom in left.

In general Dusty's quotes about Murton were good to hear.

I think this guy is going to be a very good player. He can hit. He can run. I think his power’s coming, especially when you’re strong like that in the lower half.

I don’t want to put any power numbers on him right now. I just want him to hit. If he can get the hits, the power will come because you learn how to hit the ball out of the ballpark.

Even his quote about having to give Murton a chance was good to hear - a supportive quote from a manager who hasn't been known to give young players much of a chance.

Dusty has little choice but to give Murton a chance. There isn't anyone else besides a grandpa and a St. Louis washout.

Dusty knows when St. Louis gives up on a player it means there's nothing left. And everyone knows Grissom just can't get on with his life.

Come on. It's Murton or bust. Even Dusty knows that much.

anyone seen any new pics of Murton I've read he bulked up this winter.

I haven't, but he was a decent sized kid last year. I saw him pretty close in Cincy and his got some big legs.

When I saw him at the caravan he looked pretty buff, too.

I agree, Dusty has no choice in the matter. If Mabry or Grissom play more than once every two weeks, the Cubs will be a 4th place team.

I'll be surprised if Murton plays more than 3 times a week unless he is on fire and then it'll be 5 out of 7 games tops.

Yeah, Dusty would never play either of those....

Well, I think Murton will get the bulk of the left field at bats at least through the first couple months.

I'm no fan of Baker, but I really think that any fool can see that he has little choice.

HOWEVER, I think it is highly likely that Mabry and Grissom will get 30-40 outfield starts EACH this year. If that is on occassion spelling Jones in right against tough lefties, that's not necesarilly a bad thing.

In the first 30 games, I'll put the over/under on starts (could include infield starts for Mabry):

Mabry: 7

Grissom: 7

Murton: 20

I will, however, say that it wouldn't SHOCK me to see a situation in which Murton is only getting about 55% of the at bats in left with Grissom/Mabry in far too often. I don't EXPECT it, but it wouldn't be all THAT much out of character for Dusty. As long as Grissom and Mabry are used for defensive purposes and to keep Ramirez rested at third, I don't mind seeing a few at bats from them assuming we're already up when they come in!

I hope so bmkhawk....I truely hope I am. I just don't see Baker changing his ways because IMO he's just way too stubburn.
