Pitching coach Larry Rothschild has said Prior is on pace to start his first Cactus League game around March 6 or 7. The exhibition season starts March 3. Prior has pitched in only one Cactus League game in the last two years.

I'm starting to get pumped for this season. :)

Will Carroll's response to the Cubs' denial of injury...

HERE

...sounds like good news. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I love the comments below

Just so I can update my tracker, is this Source #1, the Pete Rose reinstated source; or Source #2, the Washington Grays source?

I hope that report/rumor is false. Please, God, have mercy. Just one season of healthiness.

That year was 2003. I hope it isn't the last.

IIRC, Prior crashed into Giles in 2003 and missed 2 or 3 starts because of it, so even that year wasn't a completely healthy one.

Will Carroll is a good writer when he stays in his lane. When he tries to imitate Peter Gammons, he ends up with his foot in his mouth. He's not a scooper, and needs to stop trying to play beat reporter. He's a medical analyst, and should stick to it.

And robbed him of winning the NL Cy Young, IMO.

He was right. And unless someone had ESP, the Cubs probably knew about this issue for a while. I just wish that the team would stop BSing us and be straight with us. Chalk one up for the credibility of Will Carroll, and put another mark through the credibility of the Cubs front office.

My guess is that if the Cubs had divulged this information earlier, it would have been against Prior's wishes and thus illegal. To me their credibility remains intact.

You're assuming Prior made that request, thus your conclusion is quite premature, IMO.

I'm sure Prior was just itching to give the club permission to put out news of his shoulder not being quite right, guaranteeing a barage of the type of media attention he clearly doesn't like.

Prior doesn't have to make a request for the info to be kept quiet, he has to approve the release.

I think this was posted in another thread, but here's another Greenstein column with Will Carroll that ran in today's Trib.

Here's where the story gets more interesting: Carroll said he believes Prior knows the identity of the source. And if he doesn't, Carroll said he would share it with him. All Prior has to do is call.

"My number's not tough to find," he said.

Carroll said the only thing that bothered him about the reaction to his report was that some media members belittled his credentials.

"It's not like I just came out of nowhere," he said. "I've worked at Baseball Prospectus for four years and have two books out. I think I have some credibility.

I don't question his credibility as an analyst and I respect his work at BP. Where it gets fuzzy for me is when he's wearing a journalist hat vs. an analyst hat.

Saying he'd tell Prior who the source is (even if he suspects that Prior knows) seems poor form to me ... if he's wearing a journalist hat. Presumably the whole point of being an anonymous source is to try to maintain your anonymity.

I don't think there's any easy answer for what is internet journalism anymore.

Presumably, that source would okay the unmasking to Prior. If not, then that could really hurt his ability to get more sources.

Presumptions both ways.

I'd think twice about leaking the inside scoop to someone who volunteers that info in the Tribune without spelling out the anonymous source's wishes in the matter.

ETA: Of course, Carroll didn't write the column, he was just interviewed for it, so it's not like he had complete control over what was written.

If that were the case, the club could have cited Prior's privacy rights as to why they won't answer questions about his health.

Yeah, it's a confirmation of injury without saying so directly, but it's a more straightforward and honest answer than the blatant lies by Hendry and Co. on the topic.

What blatant lies would those be?

I remember the Cubs saying stuff like we are cautiously optimistic and so far he is on track to get in three spring starts. There were acknowledging a lack of arm strength and the need to build it up. If they aren't sure what is causing the lack of arm strength, should they come out and start speculating about what it might be before an MRI is done. A lot of players have soreness in Spring Training. Most of it goes away. When something lingers, there are a lot of things I could think of doing before announcing an injury to the public, especially one that I haven't even tested for yet. Does anyone know if Prior had an earlier MRI that the Cubs didn't tell us about?

I don't remember reading any blatant lies, but it is certainly possible that I missed some. Can you be more specific?

He's probably talking about Dusty's "nothing hurts. nothing, nothing, nothing"
