Yesterday, the Cubs announced the specifics of the day that tickets go on sale. Press Release

They'll go on sale at 8 A.M. at the box office.

Tickets can be purchased over the phone starting at 10 A.M.

Tickets can be purchased online starting at 10 A.M.

I kinda had hopes of getting Opening Day tickets as an early graduation gift to myself, but with people in Chicago getting a two hour head start, is that even possible now? For that matter, will any of first three home games still be available at 10? Anyone have any guesses?

They put them on sale 2 hours early at the box office so they could show the long lines on the news.

Or maybe they want to reward those who came out and got wristbands.

Nah, it's more for the "pomp" of the long lines than anything. That way they get free advertising on all the news programs for the 2 days leading up to it by showing everyone in line for wristbands.

You can get a wristband 2 days early. At 6 am they'll announce the number and people can run over there and get in line. They will surely announce the number of wristbands handed out .Do you really think there will be many good seats available?Brokers don't need a wristband.

All of the games will still have availability at 10. they simply can't push through enough ticket purchasers at the stadium in the first 2 hours in order to sell anything out.

however, if you don't get through the VWR within the first 30-45 minutes, probably, opening day (and the White Sox games) will be gone.

brokers do need a wristband. in fact, they have tons of people that they pay to go get wristbands so that they have the opportunity to buy tons of tickets.

How long did it take people to buy online last year?I was in the waiting room for at least an hour last year before I signed off.

i personally was in the VWR for about 2 hours before the first time I got in. I got in approximately every 20-30 minutes after that.

There are alot of tickets that will not be made available to the general public.Brokers, politicians etc. will get the best. They will also set aside a bunch for people who decide to buy season tickets later.

I got in immediately and got great Red Sox tickets. After that, I got tickets for all three White Sox games, opening day, 3 Cardinals games, Astros, etc.

I think I got in 11 or 12 times, and I ended up buying the limit.

It took about 6 hours.

They did it the same way last year, but there were plenty of tickets left for every series. I think the box office only got through the first 500 to 1000 (depending on who you ask) before 10:00 last season. I got opening day after buying tickets to four other games.

what kind of seats were available?

by the time I got in after 2 hours, the Red Sox games were almost totally gone, but I landed bleachers for the White Sox weekend games.

yeah, actually now that i went back and checked my old records, I got opening day seats too. And considering that i didn't get in for the 1st 2 hours, and that the first tickets I bought were for the White Sox Saturday game, I think i was off on my estimate

i do, however think that the White Sox games will be very tough to get this year. Which is fine, because I wouldn't be caught dead in Wrigley for any of those games.

BEWARE, There's a trick that the Cubs pull every year...

They hold back almost all of their good seats to most every game so that when someone clicks on "best available" they end up getting upper deck box or something like that. They even sell the lower level corners before the better seats in the infield.

Why do they do this? So that people feel the urgency to get any tickets possible (Oh my gosh, they're going to sell out a Tuesday night May game). Then, once all the crappy seats are sold, they will send the good tickets out the back door to the brokers.

My girlfriend was a Cubs ticket Rep. for 3 years and I could not believe the stories that she told me.

Likewise, the Cubs will "hold back" many tickets to see if they will sell out the back door. If the team is playing poorly, or the weather is bad, they will suddently have tickets available on Cubs.com.

Take my advice, go for the good games - you can ALWAYS get tickets during the week for under face value. If we as fans don't act like a bunch of crack addicts and gobble up the unattractive games/seats - we will all benefit.

Your so called girlfriend sure makes up some good stories. You cannot be serious that you actually believe this, can you?

Watch your words ... Maloney's spies are everywhere!

I've bought too many great tickets on the first day to believe such nonsense.

i took a half day off work last year just to purchase tickets. i waited in the VWR with like 40 windows open from 10 am-12:30 pm. right before i left for work, i got through and picked up 6 tickets to opening day (aka the "latroy and leicester blowing it in the 9th" game). later on that day, i got 6 box seats a cubs/pirates game in late april/early may (it was rained out). you should be able to get good seats. i had no problem doing so.

Most of the great seats aren't available, but that's not really because of the brokers. They find ways to get their hands on those seats and the WFPTS gets some, as well, but not a significant number. The tickets that are released later are ones that are unused by the Cubs or season ticket holders. Unfortunately for this year, I believe the Cubs are providing a service this year that allows season ticket holders to sell those on the secondary market.

Of course, they're out of my price range now, anyways.
