Does anyone remember in I believe it was 1987 when Hayy Caray had a stroke and WGN had celeberties fill in for him. Bill Murray announced one the games at Wrigley. He had Stone laughing so hard at times he could'nt even announce the game. If I remember right Stone did the play by play and the celeb took his spot. I use to have this game on tape I might still have it need to go to my parents house search through there stack of old vhs tapes. Does anyone else remember this. It was three hours of great stand up.

I read about this in the book "Bleachers: A Summer at Wrigley Field" which was written during the 1987 season. Even reading some of he stuff he said in print had me cackling so I'd love to see video.

I remember it, although I think it was later than 1987. It was a different celebrity each game, and one game it was Ronald Reagan (that's why I think it was later, since Reagan was still President in 1987 and I think it was after his second term was over). I remember laughing at the way Murray would insult the players from the other team (much like the long-lost art of bench jockeying).

I remember ESPN doing a thing on that game and I believe it was when Reagan was still president, because they said the security was nuts.

Me too. I'd LOVE to see that!

I looked it up in the book Where's Harry? by Steve Stone, and it was 1987. My thinking was simply that a current President would have more important things to worry about, but then again it was just one day.

Reagan once did play-by-play for Cub games on WHO radio in Des Moines. Although he was never at the games, he read the action aloud from a telegraph tape that came in from the adjoining room. The audience never caught onto the ruse, even when for one day they lost the telegraph from Chicago for about 5 minutes--Reagan simply ad libbed and said the batter had fouled off something like 12 pitches before finally registering an out.

Kinda cool that he helped announce a game while the leader of the free world; that's why most people could always connect with him.

I do remember both Reagan and Murray doing games. I think they were the only two who did a decent job. Reagan was a huge baseball fan, and Murray was a huge Cub fan.

Reagan was a huge CUB fan, not just baseball. Besides working Cub games for WHO, he went to Eureka College and was born in Dixon, the guy was true blue Illinois all the way. You can change your home base in your adult life, and he did, but you can NEVER change your baseball roots, as we all know. Dutch was a Cubbie, and like my Grandpa never saw the Cubs win a World Series. :-(

Ugh, I know that's a line in the Simpsons, but I forget who they were talking about.

Ditto.

..and I'd love a copy of the Sandberg game from '84.

Can these be purchased anywhere? I know ESPN Classic replays some of these games from time to time but I can't get that here in Canada.

It was against the Expos very early in the season. I believe it was a Friday, and the Cubs won.

Jimmy Carter was history's greatest monster (Marge in Chains). I don't know what his connections are to the Cubs. His statue made a great tetherball pole, though.

I'd love to see that Murray game.

I always remember Murray broadcasting the first night game at Wrigley Field. Morgana The Kissing Bandit ran onto the field to kiss Sandberg, and as security was leading her out Murray quipped "He lost her in the lights."

IIRC Murray said as the game began, 'Well the first guy up for the Expos is Casey Candele. He's no good.'

Murray was a riot. I remember thinking Bill would be a great replacement for Harry. However, his acting career had a renaissonce so the booth was not really an option.

I would kill someone to get a copy of this game.

In all seriousness, if anyone has a copy, send me the tape and I'll digitize it and put it on a filesharing network for all to enjoy.
