Benji Molina still remains unsigned, and has hinted he'll sit this year out if no one meets his 6 million dollar price tag.

I did find this note from Rosenthal's collumn pretty humorous.

One GM was amused by Molina's threat to sit out the season if he doesn't get the $6 million salary he is seeking. "That's great," the GM said of Molina. "He'll be another year older and fatter." Molina, 31, is listed at 5-foot-11, 225 pounds.

It's looking more and more likel Molina is the last kid standing after a game of musical chairs.

The Mets. Omar is creating an all Latin team. Personally I have no problem with it, but you guys should here the stuff the anglo Mets fans are saying on the sports talk shows. The Benson trade put a lot of these guys over the edge. And when a NYer goes over the edge it isn't pretty.

The Blue Jays, but he'll have to take less than he wants.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays appear to be willing to wait out free-agent catcher Bengie Molina, who is holding out for a $12-million (U.S.), two-year contract and is saying he won't play this year if he doesn't get it. As his options dwindle, the Blue Jays standing offer of something closer to $4 million for one year might look pretty good. The Los Angeles Dodgers stopped short of making Molina an offer last week.

"He says he wants to come and play for us," said Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi.

Ricciardi didn't need to add the next phrase, so we'll do it for him: How badly do you want to come to Toronto, Bengie? Four million dollars worth of badly?

LOL

I'd like to know which GM said that, pretty funny.

For the record, not sure he's seen 225 in quite some time.

Olney's Insider take:

Remember, at one point, Molina could have taken a three-year, $18 million deal dangled by the Mets, but didn't.

The notion that Molina might sit out the entire season, as he suggested last week, is pure insanity. If he wants to make $6 million annually, he certainly won't do it by sitting on his rear end for a season and making teams wonder if he's putting on weight. A Molina-Blue Jays merger for 2006 seems inevitable.

apparently, he's in talks w/ the dodgers. sounds like anaheim's content w/ jeff mathis.

Anaheim couldn't sign him until after May 1st since they didn't offer him arbitration. It's likely down to Dodgers and Blue Jays and neither of those teams are going to give him six million.

If Anaheim gets another catcher, it will Piazza who will be more of a DH than catcher.

Any time after May 1.

I've learned that a lot of sports radio guys don't know their collective butt cracks from one large hole in the ground.

They'll be good, no doubt. But not good enough to overcome Bos/Ny They'll be the best third place team in baseball.

I would not be surprised to see the Blue Jays pass the Red Sox this year.

Ditto. If the O's hadn't been sitting on their hands, they would have had a shot at knocking the Sox down to 4th. I really don't see Boston doing much this season.

Edit: And they'll still likely have a better record than the Cubs.

How about the fact that the Blue Jays---on paper---have a better OVERALL offense then Boston. Or how about Toronto's pitching staff can match up with Boston's. Or the fact that Toronto will have LESS holes fo 2006, then Boston.

It's not a stretch to believe that Boston is significantly worse off then 2004/2005, and that the Red Sox could be bumped to third in the AL East.

Right now, the Red Sox have no good answer at SS or CF.

Their rotation of Schilling,Beckett, Wells, Clement, and Arroyo looks great, but has more injury and performance questions than the Cubs. It could be very good, or it could end up middle of the pack. Also, will Foulke or Timlin or who close games?

They have a great heart of the order, but there's some serious questions about the team.

Off topic (and point me to the proper thread if it's getting discussed someplace else, but what's wrong with Dempster? From the article:

Expect more players to back out as the World Baseball Classic draws closer. Giants left fielder Barry Bonds and Astros left fielder Lance Berkman won't play for the U.S. due to physical concerns. Pitchers Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden and Eric Gagne are unlikely to play for Canada for the same reasons.

I'm assuming that means, being last season was Demps 1st full season both as a closer/and back after TJS, that he is not wanting to risk anything healthwise, or even chance the extra burden on his arm.

Edit: Preemptive maintenance.....something Baker needs to find an appreciation for when it comes to pitchers.

I hope so anyway.

Looks like the Blue Jays have sweetened the pot. Foxsports.com claims Molina's signing is close.

...The Blue Jays are close to signing Molina to a one-year, $5 million contract with a $7.5 million option for 2007, FOXSports.com has learned.

What an offseason for Toronto

It's pretty easy when all you have to do is spend a ton of money on long term contracts.

Burnett, Ryan, Glaus, Overbay, that's quite an offseason.

Most definitely. They went after the guys they wanted and got them.
