Free agent Jose Macias is having conversations with the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan.

We didn't think there were really six MLB teams interested in Macias.

per Rotoworld.

The Ham Fighters? What a bizarre team name!

Team names in Japan generally make reference to the corporation that owns them. In this case, the Fighters are owned by Nippon Ham.

Good thing that DOESN'T apply to MLB cause there would be some off-the-wall names. Names like the New York Fighting Steinbrenners, or the Atlanta AOL Time Warner Braves, etc, etc.

I think Tribune Newsies is closer to that Japanese feel.

If it happend in the NFL it might look something like "Chicago Bears presented by Bank One".

You know it's a matter of time til something like that happens in one of the big 4 in USA.

I was thinking the Flaming Tribunes myself.

So let me get this straight. Cubs management paid a ridiculous sum for a guy who can't land a job for any other team in the league? And not just for 1 year, but 2?

It is funny to think Macias is one year removed from getting a RAISE from the Cubs to 2.5 times the MLB minimum salary, and now he can't even get an offer for the minimum. It's even funnier that all us message board geeks knew this was likely to happen but ol' Jimbo didn't.

bankone is owned by chase.

I'm not sure if anyone remembers, but this actually did happen. In 2003 Bank One paid lots of money to have their name associated with the Bears. From the reports I heard it seemed like every time the Chicago Bears team name was mentioned it was supposed to be followed with presented by Bank One. I have no idea what happend to this deal, because I certainly never noticed a difference. However I remeber being absolutely irate upon learning of it. Maybe someone knows more about it than I.

"Bears football presented by Bank One"

The 12 year deal was struck in 2003 for Bank One to become the presenting partner.

The Chicago Bears did not, and will never, sell the rights of our team name. Our partnership with Bank One does not and will not change how the team is referred to in any fashion locally or nationally. As the Bears presenting sponsor, Bank One will enjoy a presence at Soldier Field, in addition to being the presenting sponsor for the team's community outreach projects and offseason events (Fan Convention, Draft Day Party, etc.). Creating an all-encompassing relationship is what makes the partnership between Bank One and the Bears unique.

Looks like Macias found a new home. Rotoworld:

Jose Macias - 3B - Cubs

Infielder-outfielder Jose Macias has decided to sign with the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan.

Once even Dusty Baker gave up on him, it was clearly the end. Macias, who turns 34 on Wednesday, hit .254/.274/.316 in 177 AB for the Cubs last seasom. He hadn't finished with a .300 OBP since 2001 and he had never managed a .400 slugging percentage. Jan. 23 - 10:49 pm et

it also almost happened in the NBA

I believe when the Grizzlies moved to Memphis they were owned by FedEx and if i recall right there was a lot of talk of having FedEx on the jerseys and naming them the fedexers or something. It wasn't that but something like that.

anyone else remember that or am i having one of my cough syrup induced hallucinations?
