Lavar Arrington-Brian Urlacher-Lance Briggs anyone?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2355921

I'm not going to address Lavar specifically here, but I take issue with the people who say it's stupid to waste X% of your salary cap on linebackers, or any other position. A great playmaking defense needs playmakers. If your best playmakers all happen to be LB, so be it. I understand budgetting money for offense or defense or special teams, and not wanting to overspend on backups. But once you know what you can spend on defense, let's say, what is to stop you from putting a huge chunk of that in one area if they're all starters? Granted, you'd love to have playmakers at every level, but sometimes you have to take what you can find. Plus, if you do have 3 star LB, you'd need to gameplan a little differently than if your star power was in the line. Regardless, you can always find room for stud defenders, and I think the Bears should be open to bringing in more if they get the chance.

Issac Bruce was cut also, any interest in bringing him in? I have no clue what type of year he had last year as I dont follow the Rams, but I know hes had a pretty good career.

Ike's done. He's old, and doesn't have much left.

I know this isn't Bears news, but it effects us a little.

John Clayton is reporting that the Lions have offered the 9th overall pick to the Jets for John Abraham and a 3rd rounder.

Jets should take it. Abraham will be good for about 10 games next year.

I agree. That would be a great deal for the Jets. They could either get something like D'Brick and Lendale in the draft or use the picks to trade up to the first overall and take Bush/Young/Leinart.

The Jets have a nice young defense (I think. Am I wrong?). That extra pick could be huge for them.

I understand what the Lions are trying to do, but the price seems too great.

Sam Madison is a free agent and the kind of guy that could cover Steve Smith.

Madison is gonna be 32 1/2 before the season starts. He wasn't particularly good last year (at least not pro-bowl caliber like he has been in the past). He's on the downside of his career.

I'd like Madison over Arrington personally or even better amahad Plummer cause he younger than Madison. Personally I think we need a DB rather than a lb.

Madison can't cover much of anything anymore.

Don't tell that to Jay Mariotti who is advocating us breaking the bank for him. It's pretty hard to justify spending big money on older CB's when there is so many talented defensive backs in this draft. I could even see us taking a Ko Simpson in the first, if he was there. I wouldn't be surprised or upset with that.

Mariotti has always been known for his lack of knowlege and common sense.

"If a trade does not happen then I am asking the Vikings to terminate my contract as soon as possible," Culpepper wrote.

He said he appreciated that the team's new owner, Zygi Wilf, was willing to pay him a $6 million bonus due later this month.

"However, because of the fundamental differences I have with management regarding the approach to my personal and professional life, I think it is the best business decision for both parties to go our separate ways," Culpepper said.

Sounds like the Vikings asked Pep to learn how to be an actual Quarterback now that Moss is gone

Or he thinks he should be allowed to have sex with hookers on boats whenever he wants without repercussion.

I think the real issue is that he wants more money after having a train wreck of a season ended by a catastrophic knee injury.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that C-pepp probably isn't the smartest guy in the world.

So where do they go now that they've come to an agreement?

It sounds like some conflicting reports are coming out about how active they will be. More money for the Bears means they can possibly fit more guys in. But more competition from other teams also means prices will be driven up. I personally have no interest in a lot of the backup QB options out there. I think all the talk about the lack of backup QB killing the Bears has been way overblown. I'm not quite sure how Gus Frerotte or Josh McCown helps this team. I'd like to see them get their backup QBs from the draft. You should draft a QB at least every other year. See what you can find, and see if you can develop a diamond in the rough.

But I'm still hoping they get some sort of offensive weapon via free agency, offensive line depth (and youth), and some sort of defensive help as well.

It will be interesting to see what the Bears will do. Historically, the Bears have acted very quickly in free agency. I think that Thomas Jones and Moose were the first 2 free agent signing of the last two years. That tells me that the Bears identify the players they like and need then aggressively pursue them. Angelo saying that they aren't going to be that active is likely a smoke screen.

The real benefit of this extra cap room is the ability to give Briggs an extension.

That's probably the most important thing right now. I think they will go after Randle El, then be done in free agency. I think they will fill out the rest of the team thru the draft. Every position but offensive line (expect Ogunleye and T. Jones), which doesn't really need to bring in a FA to start for the first time in a while, has been filled in the draft. I think the regime has confidence in their abilities to draft contributors to the team.

How about Kerry Collins if Oakland releases him to take on Culpepper?

I've never liked Collins, even when he had his decent seasons. He's a 70-something rated QB, he throws INTs up the whazzoo and I don't know if he's ever completed 60% of his passes. I think he'll be moderately expensive, looking for a starting job, and not friendly to young QBs taking his time.

I think he could be a decent backup QB, but I don't have interest in him being the Bears' backup QB. I'd rather they spend their money on other positions. I won't complain if they sign him, but I think it would be a misappropriation of funds.
