I miss Sammy. Cubs baseball just isn't the same without him. He's the main reason that I started watching baseball again following the 94 strike. And it really pisses me off when people blast Sammy at every opportunity. People who can't appreciate what he did for this organization probably haven't been following the Cubs for longer than a couple years.

I think it really is sickening the way that people threw him under the bus after one lousy 2004 season. Yes, he had a bad year. But, that should not have offset how many great years he gave us. I think it was shameful how the organization treated him on the way out.

One bad season should not erase the many, many great ones he had for us.

I don't think many folks "threw under the bus" b/c he did not play well in 04'. At least that's not why I was (am) upset with him (see above).

Whatever reasons you dislike him, I respect. However, I think the vast majority of Cub fans turned on Sammy during the 2004 season. He was struggling, got moved down in the order, stood 10 feet off the plate, had a miniscule batting average, and got booed at home. Yes, booed. After all he did for this team and the fans, one bad year and they booed the hell out of him.

The fact that he walked out during the final game in 2004 was just the icing on the cake for a lot of folks. Sammy started to get his detractors in 2003, but it seemed like the more he struggled at the plate, the more people forgot about past years and only focused on the "right now."

First the media turned on him big time. And then the fans followed.

I don't care to get into the reasons I think all of that happened. I still remember the good times, and that's all I care about. Sammy will always be a GOOD THING as far as I'm concerned. Perfect? Of course not. But definitely good IMHO.

i don't want to get into it over pierce. suffice it to say that the situiations are different.

Then avoid saying silly things like this:

you start liking or disliking players based on their personal lives or decisions, you need to get a life

I agree that the Pierce situation is pretty bad, but your initial statement is ludicrous.

I always have and always will love Sammy Sosa. His career may have taken a turn for the worst, but he was always the most exciting player to watch. Nothing got me more pumped up for a baseball game than watching Sammy sprint out to greet the fans. I'll never forget his moments with the Cubs. He is the reason I watch baseball, even though I get less and less excited for each season to start these days.

so, there's no difference between the two situations? or are you implying that i'm saying that you shouldn't care if someone on your favorite team commits a crime and goes to jail--thusly hurting his team by not being present to play?

let me clarify:

I DO care if a player on my favorite team robs a liquor store and goes to jail--ending his professional career.

I DON'T care if a player on my favorite team is rude to the clerk at a liquor store.

I DO care if a player on my favorite team goes to this particular liquor store frequently and is also frequently intoxicated, consequently affecting his performance on the field.

I DON'T care if a player on my favorite team gets rocked once and put squirrels down his pants for the purpose of gambling.

Sammy getting caught with the corked bat and the incidents after really put me off Sammy. I enjoyed his amazing seasons, but looking back, I sincerely doubt their ligitmacy. I was willing to give him the benifit of the doubt on the Steroid's issue up until he got caught corking, but that incident really hurt his credibility with me.

Sorry, but some of the mystique that was Sammy has faded with me.

Ernie Banks once described Sammy as the greatest Chicago Cub who ever lived. And I agree.... I miss Sammy, though it's easier to deal with the loss since he's not hitting his weight nowdays....

Beautiful thread. There was no one else like Sammy. He was an original. Cubs baseball was much more exciting with him. Anyone remember that Sammy homer in Houston to left field hit around the light tower and disappeared into the mist.

At this point I'd welcome Sammy back with open arms if he were to take a 4th OF role and start in RF against lefties. Chicago fans have a reputation of being particularly forgiving. Even so, I know a Sammy return would never ever happen for a number of reasons -- that bridge has been burned to a crisp.

the thing is, we have no idea how far the steroid scandal goes. i doubt we can trust any modern record at this point.

I gotta agree with hersheys here. I loved Sammy but I don't think his ego aged well.

Very true.

In regards to Sammy, when I saw that he had corked his bat I thought, "If he would do this, how far could he take it to get an edge?" Throw in the circumstancial evidence and his historic decline in production, I am leaning in one direction in regards to Sammy. Just my personal opinion.

Right or wrong, it's tainted my view of his past success.

Roast.

Hell yes.

Its really sad how Sosa fell from glory. He deserved so much more than what alot of the fans around here gave him. And whats more sad is no one will ever beleive his side of the story about the corked bat incident, nor will anyone ever beleive he did not take steroids, though there has been no evidence pointing towards that.

Reguardless of how the rest of his career plays out, he is still one of the best players to ever play this game.

Hank Aaron

Babe Ruth

Barry Bonds

Willy Mays

Sammy Sosa

Thats some damn good company.

Hmm. Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Lou Gehrig, etc., weren't as good as Sammy?

thats the top five homerun list. I'm not saying that those are the top five players all time...

I'm saying that he is grouped up there with some very very good players.

Also, I agree with what Cpatt said a couple threads back, Why must those who dislike sammy so much go out of their way and into a thread titled "Sammy sosa appreciation thread" to bash. And yea, the last sentance was "does anybody else miss sammy" So what? That was an invitation for others to share their sammy stories, if he wanted to talk about who did and didnt like sammy the thread would have been titled "Lets discuss the pro's and cons of sammy"
