Man I was just watchin this Sportcentury program with the 98 homerun race, an dI realized h wmuch i missed those days. Nothing else was like seeing Sammy make solid contact. It was a beautiful thing. I dont miss the Sammy of today, but I miss seeing him play in his prime. There have been many players better, but regardless of his flaws (roids, strikeouts, whatever), Sammy is still my favorite player of all time. He's the reason I started watchin the Cubs back when I was 14. Anyone else miss Sammy?

I think it is sad that he fell the way he did. I don't feel sorry for him, but I wish things would have turned out differently. I unlike many people it appears will never forget what he did for the Cubs. For years he was the only good thing they had.

Yea, I miss him too...at least the Sammy from 2001. That was a hell of a year.

He had his moments in the 2003 NLCS too...remember that shot off the camera-shed in CF? And the tying bomb in Game 1 with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

I was at the game in 98 where he hit 61 and 62 also. If I remember right, Grace ended that game with a walkoff.

Great memories.

cubs without sammy = worthless and no fun

i miss sammy like crazy. i sure wish he'd stop acting weird and making me question that, though.

In a weird way I miss Sammy, the home run race with Mac is what brought me back to baseball. Not to mention as a Cards fan he was the player you loved to hate, I guess Z has taken over that role but it's not the same. :?

I miss Sammy. Cubs baseball just isn't the same without him. He's the main reason that I started watching baseball again following the 94 strike. And it really pisses me off when people blast Sammy at every opportunity. People who can't appreciate what he did for this organization probably haven't been following the Cubs for longer than a couple years.

Sosa in his prime & during the HR race was very exciting. Those times were fun. However, Corking his bat, claiming he can't speak English in front of Congress & walking out on his teammates in 04' is all I needed to know about what type of person he is. His egotistical attitude got the best of him. No Sammy you are not bigger than the game, even though you thought you were. I will not miss Sammy. If I want to remember him, I'll tune in to watch CPatt swing & miss in the clutch. Quit living in the past Sosa lovers, it's over. What Sosa gave us as Cub fans in 04' is enough to forget him.

appreciation is all about living in the past. it's about being happy about the things that have already taken place.

shut up! "Sammy" sosa is the worst person on earth. don't you know that he lost us the pennant on the last day of 2004 by walking out before the game was over? that was worth like 20 games right there.

and he really should learn to speak english, who cares if his lawyers told him to go with the interpreter so he wouldn't be misunderstood? and i know that it was him that stole christmas by thinking he was bigger than the game (whatever that means).

seriously, if you want to stop living in the past, you need to stop remembering every cubs player that has ever lived. forget sandberg, grace, santo, kessinger, williams, sutcliffe, etc.

this sammy hatred has gone too far. he's the most productive offensive player in cub history, a first ballot hall of famer, and a guy that brought people back to the game. oh yeah, and he was the only reason to turn on wgn for years. but "stop living in the past"--i hear that sammy wasn't a saint, so we all should hate him.

if you start liking or disliking players based on their personal lives or decisions, you need to get a life.

i really like the concept of putting people's names in quotation marks if i don't like them. it doesn't really mean anything, but it seems like you're sincerely questioning their character.

Is it ok to not like Steve Alford for allowing a man convicted of rape to continue to play? This is a legitimate question.

And I liked Sammy when he was here, but he hurt nobody but himself with his actions in his latter years. My "sympathy meter" isn't bleeding for him.

I agree 100% even if I never was a big Sammy fan even in his prime. I never cared for the "me and my supporting cast" type of athlete, including Michael Jordan, but the Sosa-bashing these days has gone too far.

I was one of the few who wanted him to be traded in 2001 (assuming equal value of course), but I definitely appreciated what he could do with the bat. 1998 was a unique year as a baseball fan -- absolutely unforgettable.

In a nutshell I do appreciate Sammy for the thrills he brought the ballpark everyday, even if I didn't care for his attitude. As someone else said , I sorely miss the offensive #'s from RF.

I wish I'd seen Game 1 NLCS when Sammy hit the game-tying HR off Urbina in the bottom of the ninth -- I can only imagine the crowd reaction:

that's right, i asked tim to do that last year.

it really doesn't help illustrate my point here, though.
