Really for a small market team he wouldn't be a bad guy to take a flyer on. His name alone could put some butts in the stands.

If Pittsburgh residents didn't come to watch Pirates playoff teams from the past, what makes you think they will come to watch an old has been close out his career?

Because so few of us were around then.

If Sammy's buying then why not, hey? :)

Looks like crazy trade rumor guy might have gotten one right for a change.

Could Sammy Sosa be returning to play right field in Wrigley Field? No, not as a member of the Cubs, but as a member of the Pirates. An article from a Dominican news service said Pittsburgh is interested in signing Sosa.

According to the article, after signing Joe Randa as its third baseman, the Pirates want to sign one more free agent this winter and now that first choice Eric Byrnes has a tentative agreement with Arizona, Sosa is the primary target.

It won't happen, but Sosa would be a great platoon option with Jones in RF.

Sammy wasn't good at all in 2005 overall, but his splits against lefties were good: .370 OBP and .471 SLG. That's better than Jacque does against righties.

If Sammy does go to Pittsburgh, bleacher seats for the first Pirates/Cubs game at Wrigley instantly become tough tickets.

vance_the_cubs_fan rote "Considering Sammy's idol is Roberto Clemente, Sosa may have a lot of interest in playing rightfield for the Pirates too".

(Of course Sammy is probably hoping to just land a job anywhere right now.)

-- You know, Vance's post got me thinking, if Sammy does in fact sign with Pittsburgh, he will have to choose another number, because his idol wore #21 for the Pirates. What number do y'all think he would choose? #20?, #22?

Actually, Pittsburgh residents turned out in droves for their playoff games. They didn't start staying away from the park until all the good players signed elsewhere.

Just making a couple of random guesses; he could reverse the numbers and go with 12, or add them together and wear 3. Forgive me if those numbers have been retired by the Pirates; I'm not familiar at all with what their great players wore besides Clemente.

When he arrived in the majors, he wore #17. Don't know that he'd wear it again, but that was his original #.

He also wore No. 11 in his first Spring Training with the Cubs, but switched to No. 21 in time for the regular season. Humberto Cota currently has claim to No. 11 for Pittsburgh, and I believe No. 17's been vacant since Bobby Hill's demotion(s). Certainly Humberto Cota would vacate the number if Sammy asked nicely and/or peeled a few $100 bills off the old Sosa billfold?

Pittsburgh's list of retired numbers is:

Roberto Clemente 21
Ralph Kiner 4
Bill Mazeroski 9
Billy Meyer 1
Danny Murtaugh 40
Willie Stargell 8
Pie Traynor 20
Honus Wagner 33
