Gaining some experience to what may be the youngest team in the league, the Marlins signed reliever Joe Borowski and infielder Pokey Reese to one-year contracts.

Reese could play 2b or SS for the Marlins. Borowski adds a veteran presence to the bullpen.

People still pay Pokey to pay baseball? Hell you say!

he can really catch the ball.

What's the point? The Marlins aren't gonna win. JoeBo and Pookie are just gonna take time from someone that can develop.
Exactly. The move doesn't make sense at all.

Is any one besides Ramirez a top middle inffield prospect currently? Looking at their 40 man roster, nobody look like the guy you don't wanna block. So why not have a veteran presence and let him compete for the job.

They need SOME veteran presence. It would hurt all those young guys in such a clubhouse. I don't know how well Borowski will do, but with the way contracts have been handed out this offseason to relievers, hes probably one of the better veteran pitching influences they could get a a decent price. And if there was someone who could relate to the young guys when times get rough, it would be him.

Well, they did draft a 2B in the Rule V draft. Someone from the DBacks organization. Even though they are my hometown team, I cannot remember which guy it was. Anyway... can't imagine that they'd draft a guy to sit him for a full season behind pokey.

Fine then Pokey can backup. Bottom line is they need veteran presence.

Think of it as Antionio Davis/Adrian Griffin/Eric Piakowski for the Bulls last year. If you don't follow the Bulls then I don't know what to tel you. But especially AD was huge in leading that team. And even though they had a guy, in Tyon Chandler with nice potential, he sat behind him on the bench behind him. Its a little different in basketball where a lot of guys see the court anyway and you can sub in and out as much as you need, but the point remains, veteran presence is a need over there. All but about 5 guys were born in 1980 or later.

Dan Uggla?

Yeah, I guess it was Uggla. Since they became a DBacks farm team, I haven't paid much attention to them. Now I only go for West Tenn games. When they were a Cards farm team, I would go frequently to see what the enemy had coming up. Now, if the rumors of the Cubs leaving Jackson at the end of 2006 are true, and the rumors that they end up in East Tennessee, I'll attend 30-40 games a season.

Anywho... Uggla it is. And, it's surprising that Uggla would have been drafted. I never saw anything special about him. He moved around alot, and he's a gritty player (think David Eckstein with more versatility) but I'm really surprised that he would be drafted in the Rule V Draft,.

They can trade Joe B at the trade deadline to a team that needs bullpen help and get even more young guys.

I wonder what he looks like.

They have Hanley Ramirez, Alfredo Amezaga, Robert Andino (#6 prospect), and Josh Wilson (Alex Gonzalez with better average) for the middle IF. Hard to believe Pookie would be too much better than any of them.

Doubtful. Joe's not going to bring you back anybody of quality. And signing guys with the hope of trading them later makes no sense to me.

not to hijack the thread, but this is new to me, East TN may end up with a Cubs farm team? what level and to what town? I just moved to NW NC, it would be awsome to have a Cubs affiliate as my closest pro ball team...

edit: disregard this post, Ijust answered my questions, the Diamond Jaxx AA likely to go to Nashville...

Nashville isnt East TN, its pretty much central TN, 5-6 hour drive for me

If he pitches well, some team in the race will probably overpay for him. They might not get much, but they could get *something* for him.
