I thought this was a 'Phil Rodgers" type trade but it sounds like it might have some legs. He didn't mention Wood's no-trade clause, but he does have Emmy's - so he's got credability in the media somewhere.

Could Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood be on his way to the Nats this off season? (AP file photo)

It is the holiday season and we all know the Nationals want pitching under their tree.

But the cost of the top-name free agents exceeds their budget. However, a real nice stocking stuffer could come in a trade that would send Jose Vidro and reserve outfielder Ryan Church to the Cubs in exchange for starting pitcher Kerry Wood.

The deal has more than a few details to be worked out, but there are two key issues. First, Vidro’s leg injuries have to be mended. Part two is Wood’s health and hefty contract.

If the deal happens, look for it to go down closer to spring training. Moving Vidro would pacify newly acquired second baseman Alfonso Soriano, who is cold on a move to the outfield.

Stay tuned.

I'm sorry, I just puked all over myself........

Intriguing, it would have to wait until spring training for both parties though, they'd want to see Kerry healthy, we'd want to see Vidro healthy.

As for Church, wow. After being demoralized to the Jacque Jones level, Church is looking GREAT. Even his line from last year, his first real shot in the bigs, would be acceptable.

And his minor league stats are amazing too...

Who is going to be the first to say it?

Sigh. I will.

Kerry Wood and his wife (from Waukegan, IL) are expecting their first child. Kerry Wood makes $12m/yr. Kerry Wood is coming off of shoulder surgery, and may or may not be ready to go at the start of the season. And finally, Kerry Wood has a full NTC.

Thusly, it is hard to imagine a player on the Cubs with less trade value right now, or with less reason to uproot his family to go to Washington DC of all places.

In conclusion, reporters everywhere show stunning laziness when it comes to doing background work on Kerry Wood.

As far as the substance of the spahgetti thrown against the wall, Vidro and Church for Wood is, in theory, a fairish deal. You get a player with major injury concerns and a big contract and a young corner OF guy for a potential #1-2 starter in the final year of the contract. So, in the alternate universe that this deal might be legit in, it's not a terrible deal.

Posted

Hell, all I think it'd take to get him to waive the NTC is a 1 year contract extension at his current salary.

We take back Vidro and Church, pay the difference in salary (about $6 million). They sign Wood to a 1 year extension at $13 million, and wind up with Kerrry Wood for 2/20, pretty damn reasonable in a market where Washburn gets near 4/40.

Not that it will happen, but it's silly to think there is no scenario where Wood would waive his NTC. Hell, couple months of being a reliever and watching his 2007 contract hopes dimmer (nobody would throw a big contract at an injury plagued guy who hasn't started in over a year) and I bet Wood would take a trade.

Williams for Church makes more sense for both sides IMO. It's less of a contract/injury risk for the Nats. Obviously Williams isn't the kind of front line starter that Kerry is (when healthy), but I think he'd be pretty good for them.

However, some of the motivation for the Nationals would be to get rid of Vidro to make room for Soriano and Williams for Church doesn't solve that.

Would you uproot your pregnant wife and move her 900 miles away from home when you're already a very rich man?

Williams for Church and Vidro, however, does just that. The Nats free up almost 7 million dollars which could probably net them another starter.

If the Cubs got Vidro that would pretty much seal the Walker to whoever deal. IMO, Wash is a little in a corner with the mulitple 2B's so I think that Hendry could get a pretty decent deal here.

What I would wonder is, can you hold onto Walker long enough to be sure that Vidro is going to be healthy and/or ready to start the season. If he is, you could then move Walker during Spring Training. The down side being that you're not going to get as much for Walker if everyone knows you are going to trade him.

Another option would be to move Walker to the super-sub role he was supposedly signed to two years ago. Play a little corner OF, some 1B, some 2B, some 3B, etc. If he would accept it. That would basically make him a more talented (offensively) John Mabry.

Good idea and I'd like to see if Walker could play another postion. Did he play anything other than 2B last year?

Didn't Vidro used to play 3rd? He could back up ARam.

He played 1B a few games last year when Lee was out. IIRC, when he originally signed, it was to play some 2B, some 1B and some LF. That never happened and he basically ended up platooning with Grudz (until Grudz was injured). If Vidro can play 3B, all the better. One less position for Walker to have to attempt. I'd think he could be servicable as a backup in LF. Not sure he has the arm for RF.

To the question of if I'd uproot my pregnant wife, well, I've never had the chance to turn down $13 million dollars, hehe, hard to know what I'd do. Would probably depend on if my wife was interested in relocating from Chicago to the Washington area.

And, it's not like the Cubs had a problem going into 2004 with two starter-level 2B's. Let them platoon at 2B, Todd facing righties, Vidro facing lefties, give Vidro a few starts here and there to rest Lee and Ramirez, and whoever isn't playing is your pinch hitter.

I would love to see an OF with Church and Murton as the corners (or church in center in the future) , both young guys who are going to get on base. Plus with the power we have from our corner infielders, I dont feel as strong a need for power in the OF. Both he and Murton are gonna be cheap for a few years, next year move church to center, keep murton in left and throw some money at a slugging RF....

But we know nothing is gonna happen, especially for wood

By some posters too.

Having a wife that grew up in Chicago means absolutely nothing. The Woods live in Arizona during the off-season.

with less reason to uproot his family to go to Washington DC of all places..

Uproot from what? Even you know there are plenty of doctors, flights to Chicago and nice areas in the VA. and MD. countryside for the Woods to live in from April-Sept.

a potential #1-2 starter in the final year of the contract..

$12 million+ for a potential #1-2. HA!!

In conclusion, reporters everywhere show stunning laziness when it comes to doing background work on Kerry Wood...

Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Why not keep her 900 miles away from you, hire somebody to hang out with her and get her pickles and ice cream at 3 am, then go to a new city with a whole new set of groupies?

Really, if I was in Wood's position, I'd let the Cubs shop me quietly. And if they kept it quiet, I'd let them trade me if the other team was either my ideal location to work and/or they offered me a sweet contract extension.

I wouldn't want to deal with 2 months of questions from the media about whether or not I was going, so keeping it quiet would be a must.

Any way we can just pry Church away from the Nats? Would Williams be enough? What else would it take?
