Figure Skating, Gymnastics, Competitive cheerleading are all difficult and athletic events, but are not sports.

I think a criteria for a sport is that your destiny is in your hands. Granted, you might have a couple bad calls in baseball or football, but in those three, it's all judges. If a judge doesn't like you, you don't win. Look at the Canadian figure skater couple in the 02 winter games or the men's highbar competition in Athens.

So that's why I put NASCAR as a sport.

Who was the person who got hosed in the high bar again?
Me. I showed up wearing a unitard and everything, and they wouldn't even let me compete.

I suspect he was referring to the gymnast (Korean, I believe, but I'm not positive) who was competing for the all-around title. The judges inadvertantly used too low of a starting score to deduct from and, as a result, Paul Hamm of the U.S. won the gold.

What if your car blows up? You don't have any control over that.

In baseball, what if your bat breaks because the tree it was made out of didn't get proper watering twelve years ago?

You don't lose the game if your bat breaks.

You do if there are two outs in the ninth and the broken bat causes you to hit a weak grounder instead of a line drive to the outfield. :D

Not if you're fast enough. :D

there are a lot of things out of the drivers control in NASCAR - like the car breaking down or not running efficiently etc. the only real sport is pure athletic competition like running, swimming, jumping - everything else is fabricated.

In horse racing, why is the winner [Horse's Name], ridden by [Jockey Name], but in car racing it's [Driver name] driving a [Car Name/Brand]?

Haha, that's true. Is that implying that it's easier to ride a winning horse to victory than it is to drive the best car to victory?

I've never ridden a horse or driven a really fast car, so I wouldn't know.

Or that the horse gets credit for the victory, while the car driver does as well.

Because the horse's services can be sold for big $$$ if he/she is a winner and the car can't reproduce?

But running, swimming, and jumping there is no defense. So an athletic event yes. A sport???

Now if say the NYC Marathon was ran during rush hour traffic now that is a sport.

Or a swimming event with a pool full of bull sharks now that makes it more interesting.

Or how about randomly adjusting hurdle heights? Now there's a challenge.

If Nascar is a sport (and it's not), then the cars are the athletes.

you stole my thunder

Now, what if the race horses are driving the race cars?

Most racing leagues arrange things so that the cars all have to be pretty much the same. horses, on the other hand, are non-generic. While I don't have the practical knowledge to know if there's a greater factor of driver/rider skill in car racing, it is logical to give the horse more credit.

They still point out whether a NASCAR drives a Ford or a Toyota or whatever it is though, so there's obviously some difference.
