As I was traveling between work locations this afternoon, I listened to XM 175. Chuck Wilson was interviewing a beat writer from Pittsburgh (sorry I can't recall who), and he was discussing the fact that Jim Tracy had a "type" of player that he wanted Littlefield to acquire and those who didn't fit that type (Rob Mackowiak) were being traded.

He mentioned that Craig Wilson strikes out too much for Tracy's tastes and indicated that Wilson was being shopped. At first, my response was "meh...we can do better than Craig Wilson."

But, I looked up his numbers here, and he's not that bad.

2005: 264/387/421

2004: 264/354/499

2003: 262/360/511

He's righthanded, and I think we'd all prefer a left handed bopper in right. But, he's appears to be a better option than Mench.

I wouldn't say he should be priority number one, but I might at least inquire what the Pirates would want should we want to attain him.

Thoughts?

I just don't think that Wilson is going to be the type of player we target this offseason. I also don't think he'd be a good fit for this team. He's an all or nothing offensive player, which has proven to he highly unsuccessful for the Cubs in the last several seasons, and he's a definite defensive liability. I say no, but it's not a stark no, but I definately think we had better do much better.

Can someone please get a hair joke out of the way? Thanks!

Let's not make this the mane acquisition of the offseason.

Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week. Try the veal!

I've read that a knock on him is he wears quicky as the season wears on. Therefore he might be a better platoon option.

For his career, he only has 9 fewer games post-ASB, and has an OPS 18 points higher.

He would be a great platoon option though, and his numbers against RHP aren't terrible.

I wouldn't rank him ahead of Wilkerson, Bradley, Ibanez, Tracy, Floyd, Green, Huff as options; but Wilson would be a better option than signing Preston Wilson, Jacque Jones, or Juan Encarnacion to multi-year deals. I'd rank him equal to Mench and he's probably going to be cheaper to acquire.

Yeah but 04 was is first everyday season and here's what you get...

Pre-All Star .286/.378/.535

Post-All Star .235/.322/.453

It's only one season but that's his rep.

I'm gonna go ahead and say yes - get him if the price is right. Those numbers are better than what Mench, Jones, Bradley are likely to put up. And while he's not fantastic, I do like his roughly .100 IsoD and the .350 plus OBP. And, with the exception of last year, he's hit for pretty good power.

So, while he's not perfect, and ideally we'd have more production from RF, I'd definitely see if we can get a hold of him. He's a much better option than some of the other names that have been thrown around.

I'd rather resign Burnitz than trade for Wilson

Except that Wilson is 9 years younger.

Plus all the Lincoln Park Trixies at Wrigley will enjoy is flowing golden locks.

Honestly, he would be a good pick up for the Cubs as long as Mabry subs for him about once a week.

Sorry, but I just can't see Burnitz being a better option than Wilson. I don't want either, but I don't want to see Burnitz in Cubs uniform ever again. I could at least stomach Wilson.

I think you're getting Wrigley confused with Cell One Ball Park... :D

It's been my experience that Wrigley girls are hot in a sorority girl kind of way and CellOne girls are hot in a stripper kind of way.

There should really be a separate thread to how hot Wrigley girls are. When my friends and I went up to Wrigley for the June 28-30 Brewers games there were at least two hot girls right near us in the bleachers for each of the three games. :D

An interesting note on Craig Wilson: His good OBP is largely a factor of his ability to get in the way of the pitch. Three times in his career he has been in the top 10, twice as the top dog.
