Juan Pierre - OF - Cubs

The Cubs aren't planning to seek a long-term contract with Juan Pierre before the start of next season, his last before free agency.

Felix Pie could be ready to play center field in 2007, so it's possible Pierre is just a one-year rental for the Cubs. Dec. 9 - 3:02

Welcome Konan.

I agree, expensive for a one-year rental, but if that one year results in Felix Pie not being destroyed like CPatt was by too much, too soon, then it could turn out to be well worth it in Pie's future production.

hendry has already said in interviews that they plan on trying to sign pierre to a long term deal. if they do get it done, that would move pie to rf. he could turn out to be a bobby abreu type guy hitting 25-30 hr's & stealing 30+ bases.

Pie will likely increase his power numbers. After all he was a malnurished kid when they found him. However, he likely won't put up power numbers for a while. In addition, he has to cut down on the Ks and start taking some walks if he wants to succeed in the major leagues.

According to scouts and people that have seen him play Pie has the bat speed to generate very good power numbers (bat speed is much more important that muscle strenght in determining HR potential). I wouldn't rule out him becomming a RFer or hitting for good power too soon.

in order to be a bobby abreu type-player, he'd have to walk 100 times as well.

you forget that the most attractive feature of abreu's game is his disicpline. if we wanted 30 hrs plus 30 SB's we could go out and acquire soriano.

and have a horrible defensive rf. pie is supposed to have a great glove and very strong arm to go along with his offensive production.

that's not the point. abreu's walk totals are what sets him apart from your average 30+ HR 30+ steal guy. his worth is in his OBP.

Am I missing something?

Also, I don't want Pie leading off. That is not a role that he should have to fill during his career. He has shown throughout his minor league career that he is going to have a high walk rate. Granted, he can change that but it isn't very likely.

If they aren't going to sign Pierre to an extension, I really don't understand the trade...

Apparently I am. Thought the post was old and that he posted once and dissappeared. Welcome to the forum Konan.

I think Hendry has made comments to the effect of trying to get a multi-year deal done next offseason. I'd think he would want to do it earlier, but perhaps he's waiting to judge Pie's progression this year.

hmm, he should at least sign him to a one year extension or something, bad idea to wait and see, you know, what if he has an All Star year? Best to sign coming off of a down year.

Sign Pierre to a new two or three-year deal, then if Pie is clearly ready to play in 07 then you can always shop Pierre and get a few prospects back or something.

In all fairness, the article that Rotoworld uses as it's reference actually contains wording by Hendry that says ideally he would like to keep Pierre long term. Rotoworld gives the impression that the Cubs got him with the intention of being a stop gap.

Here's the article

Hendry said he did not consider Pierre a one-year rent-a-player, even though free agency approaches next fall. Instead of signing Pierre now, Hendry would prefer to see where his talent level is after next season. That doesn't mean Hendry won't want him back, but if top prospect Felix Pie blossoms, he would be a cheaper alternative.

"To look at it optimistically, this [would not be] a one-year thing," Hendry said. "And obviously, our track record with guys we want to keep has been pretty good."

Here's another quote from Cubs.com:

"We didn't look at Juan as a guy we're going to have one year," Hendry said. "We love Felix Pie, and if he does what we hope he can do, and we're fortunate to keep Juan longer, I see no problem with Felix playing somewhere else besides center field. If it works out the way we hope, we'll find plenty of room for our own guys, too."

Exactly. I have been in general disappointed by Hendry this offseason, but giving up Nolasco + Pinto + Mitre for a one-year stopgap would make absolutely no sense.

The trouble with this theory is, we have 3 holes to fill in the outfield, not just 1.

It's not like Pie couldn't come up and play LF or RF, depeding on whether Murton succeeds or not. Or, Pierre could shift. The original quote seems to assume that if Pie is ready in 2007, there's no room for Pierre. This is just simply not true.
