Julio gets 2yr/2.2M from Mets

Anyone else surprised to see Julio get two years? Omar Minaya's got some serious bro-love for that man. Maybe he thought the team could use a grandfatherly figure around, to teach them how to whittle, tell old war stories and get the occasional pinch hit. If there's one thing you can say about Julio Franco is that he keeps himself in superior shape.

If there's another thing you can say, it's that he sure does love him some Jesus.

The Mets must've felt empty without an old Franco.

At least this one doesn't carry any New York mob connections.

What ever happened to him? Retirement?

I think he got whacked.

I don't know if he formally retired, but he is going to be the pitching coach for Italy in the WBC.

John Franco was doing radio broadcasts during the playoffs this year as a color commentator.

One time Frank Sinatra came inside here and sat down in this chair. I said, Frank, you hang out with Julio Franco all the time, tell me, how old is Julio Franco? You know what Frank told me, he said, Hey, Julio Franco 137 years old. 137 years old!

Well when he finishes this contract he'll just be one year shy of his goal ... playing until he turns 50.

He's a year older than Sandberg.

I'll guess it wasn't Sandberg!

I believe that would be Satchell Paige, who pitched at the tender age of 59.

He was also the oldest "rookie" at the age of 42.

Stachel Paige pitched for the Kansas City Royals in 1965 at the age of 58 and Orestes "Minnie" Minoso played for the white sox in 1980 at the age of 57. I believe these 2 qualify as the 1-2 in oldest men to play in the majors. Neither man played regularly at their advanced age. Page was last used regularly in 1952 by the St Louis Browns at the age of 45, while Minoso was last a regular player in 1963 with the Washington Senators at the age of 40.

Wow, what a list. I'd love to see Julio play into his 50's.

Maybe Julio IS in his 50's. You're never really sure about ages of some MLB players.

Maaaan.. you never met no Frank Sinatra...

I was walking around a corner in Memphis Tennessee when someone hit me in my chest. I looked up and it was Dr. Martin Luther King! I said, "Dr. King, why'd you do that?" He said, "oops, I thought you were someone else".

Does anyone know who the oldest major leaguer to hit a home run is? I thought I heard somewhere that with the next home run Franco hits, he'll become the oldest major leaguer to do so.

He keeps himself in great shape, still has a very quick bat (despite the weight of it), and will likely be a part-time role. He's still very productive, I have a great deal of respect for what he has been able to accomplish.
