How many PTBNL do the Cubs have coming?

3 I believe... 1 here, 1 for Wellemeyer, and 1 for Van Buren.

You mean Leicester not Welly right?

Yeah. Got me before I had a chance to edit that out.

By the way....thanks!

I wonder if one of these deals could spark a bigger one?

I thought we were supposed to get a replacement player from Baltimore for David Crouthers (who retired), but I don't know what ever happened with that.

I think they sent Hendry some crabcakes to close the deal.

Where'd Leicester go again? I know JVB went to Boston.

We received cash considerations in lieu of a replacement player.

Thanks! I figured it had been settled by this point, but I wasn't sure how.

Does anyone know anything about Juan Mateo? Looking at his stats at Daytona, he had about 10 K's/9 IP and has pretty good control. He's 22 years old.

Bo Fuliniti, the former Daytona Cubs broadcaster (he recently accepted a position with the Stockton Ports), answered some questions about Mateo here. He did the Q&A for NSBB in early August.

FINALLY, AND JUAN MATEO: HE IS THE WILDCARD OF THE BUNCH BECAUSE THERE IS NO TELLING HOW FAR HE MIGHT GO. WE MOVED HIM FROM THE BULLPEN TO THE ROTATION ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN MIXED. IT'S TAKEN HIM A LITTLE WHILE TO BUILD UP THE ARM STRENGTH TO GO 6 OR 7 FULL FRAMES, BUT HE IS SLOWLY GETTING THERE. AS ALWAYS, THROWING STRIKES IS KEY FOR HIM, BUT HIS OUTPITCH IS A FILTHY SLIDER THAT HE THROWS LOW AND AWAY TO RIGHT-HANDED BATTERS, AND HE HAS GOTTEN HIMSELF OUT OF A LOT OF TROUBLE THIS SEASON WITH THAT PITCH. KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR HIS NUMBERS AT THE END OF THE SEASON...THEY SHOULD BE VERY RESPECTABLE.

AS FAR AS MATEO, HE IS A HUGE QUESTION MARK. HIS FASTBALL IS SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE, BUT HIS SLIDER IS HIS TICKET TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF THE ORGANIZATION, AND HE WILL GET A TRUE TEST IN THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE. IF HIS NUMBERS CONTINUE TO RISE THAN THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO BELIEVE HE WOULD GET A SHOT IN ABOUT THREE YEARS.

There's been other discussion of Mateo in the Minor Leagues Forum, but it would be difficult to track down without the search function.

Thanks for the Mateo info. His numbers were good...high strikeout, low walk, so I was curious what his fastball was like. The way they talked on XM after the draft, it sounds like the Cardinals might give him a legit shot to stick in the bullpen in 2006. Hope this one doesn't haunt the Cubs.

No one took Sing or Rohlicek?

Shocking!

The Cubs should have taken Sing. His numbers look better than that Rifkin dude's...

Sing is on the AA roster, so he can be drafted now. Rohlicek was on the AAA roster so he's safe now. (According to cubs.com rosters.)

On this point, the actual roster the player is on isn't what is important. Just as Pie is protected on the major league roster despite not playing in the majors this coming season, Sing (along with all the best prospects not in AAA were protected on the AAA roster.

I was pretty upset about not protecting Sing, and probably bashed Hendry a bit for it(don't remember if I did or how bad it was), but regardless, I am going to help myself to a nice big meal of....

Yep, Crow! mmmmmm

Glad we didn't lose Sing. Sounds like Hendry knew what he was doing here and didn't just get lucky. Nice job Jim.

How did I just now realize how good a season Mateo had in Daytona? Is his stuff nonexistent?

I believe he has a low 90s fastball and a good slider, I've been rooting for him. I'm sad to see him get drafted. I don't much care for the others the Cubs lost.
