Today is the Non-Tender Deadline

Not true.

Everything I've heard is that today is the arbitration deadline. Isn't that the same thing?

Posted
no, today teams have to offer arbitration. if a team offers arbitration, the player has until 12/19 to accept. The team would then tender a contract offer and the player a counter-offer. If a team opts not to tender a contract offer, the player becomes a free agent. I believe that deadline is 12/20. If a player is not offered arbitration by today, he becomes a free agent (this we can hope for macias).

Today is the deadline for offering arbitration to your free agents (Nomar, Burnitz).

December 20th is the deadline for offering contracts to all of the players under your control - arbitration eligible guys like Zambrano, Patterson, Hairston, and Macias - and 0-3 guys like Murton, Cedeno, Wuertz, Hill, etc. When you offer ("tender") a contract to an arbitration eligible guy like Macias, you have in effect offered him arbitration.

If you don't, you've "non-tendered" him.

Today is say so long to Nomar and Burntiz day.

We won't offer either arbitration I'm pretty sure.

Don't forget Chad Fox. :?

If the cubs don't offer arbitration, isn't Macias gone til May anyway?

Please read my post above carefully. Everything you need is in there.

Why wouldn't they with Nomar, just in case? Even if they have no intentions of re-signing him right now, wouldn't it be nice to not close that door for a couple of weeks?

Because, if he accepts, you're potentially on the hook for a lot of money for a guy who'll end up being a glorified utility guy.

He made 8 million last season. If he accepts arbitration, you can only cut his salary by 20%. He'd be guaranteed 6.4 million as the floor. No one hardly ever gets a pay cut through the system. So, Nomar could accept arbitration and force the Cubs to pay him between 7-9 million dollars next season. That risk is one the Cubs can't afford to take.

In fact, if the Cubs offer arbitration, I would bet with almost certainty that Nomar would, in fact, accept.

I guess I'm just looking at this with blinders on. I have always liked Nomar, and I have a really bad feeling that letting him walk will come back to bite us somehow. Isn't it almost worth paying him 7-9 mil just to keep him out of St. Louis?

Ah, never mind. Goodbye, Nomah, it was wicked fun while it lasted...

Can they offer him a contract or does it have to go the arbitration route?

If so, why not offer up 2 years/6 mill with incentives? With Cedeno (slumping) and ARam (injury) needing time off and the possibly of Walker being moved I would take a chance on him.

I believe the Cubs have to offer arbitration to macias or lose him to free agency.

Yes, but the deadline for doing that is December 20th, not today.

Vance, people say this all the time, but I'm not certain that it's true.

I know for a fact that you cannot cut a 0-3 guy's salary by more than 20%. That makes sense, because those guys have no power whatsoever.

But why would arb eligible guys need that rule? The arbitration process should weed out any out-of-line offers. If the Cubs submitted $2 and Nomar submitted $7, the arbiter is certainly not going to choose the Cubs' ridiculous offer.

Does anyone know 100% for sure to whom the 20% cut rule applies?

No guesses, please. Just the facts, ma'am.

I don't think Nomar is going to be willing to take a 2 yr, 6 mill. dollar offer to be back up, I think he believes he can still start, and will go that route. Also, I wouldn't count on Macias being cut. In fact, I would probably guess that he is going to be on the bench next year, as he is a Dusty guy.

For a second, because this came after a Macias post, I thought you were referring to him, and not Nomar. I was about to have you committed, involuntarily to the nearest mental facility. For your own good, of course.

I'm going to be honest...I passed that post up too, but only because I didn't really know what to say since it was after a Macias post.

I've been wearing my Nomar shirt all day today in hopes of a miracle.
