From Rotoworld:

The Red Sox, Braves and Rays are reportedly discussing a three-team deal that would send Edgar Renteria to Atlanta, Andy Marte to Tampa Bay and Julio Lugo to Boston.

If that's something the Braves are really willing to do -- we're quite skeptical -- the Red Sox should seriously consider eliminating the middle man and taking Marte. Actually, the Globe's Gordon Edes said the Red Sox could play Lugo at second and attempt to acquire Orlando Cabrera from the Angels, which sounds like a terrible idea to us.

This hasn't been the best offseason for intelligence on the whole, has it?

I think we're seeing two things here:

1. How much Theo meant to that team, and

2. Why he left them.

why the heck would you sign Renteria for a 5 year deal last year only to trade him after one (yes one year out of 5) subpar season?

fixed.

Why would the Braves be interested in Renteria and his 10 million per year contract?

Because they're desperate for a shortstop and all their good free agents are leaving? (Furcal, Farns)

Yeah, but Lugo would be much cheaper, plus they have Betemit and a whole cast of others in house who could play SS for less than a tenth of the cost of Renteria.

I don't think they would be paying that entire contract, especially giving up a great prospect like Marte.

Let's just quit trying to figure out the master plan of all the GMs this offseason. It's quite obvious none of them have one.

The first source was the Boston Globe, now the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has their own story.

From Rotoworld:

Talks are "percolating" tonight on the proposed three-team deal sending Edgar Renteria to Atlanta, Andy Marte to Tampa Bay and Julio Lugo to Boston, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Confirming the Globe's report. The Braves also discussed a three-team deal with Colorado and Tampa Bay that would have put Lugo in Atlanta and Johnny Estrada in Colorado, but those negotiations cooled some as the other trade talks began heating up.

Atlanta obviously doesn't mind the young guys, look at their roster last year. Should we strike first for Lugo, then investigate a RonnyC for Marte trade?
