  1. Let's hope so. What are the estimates for his contract?
  2. Because they believe he's in a pretty steep post 30 decline. He's older, bigger and slower than he was when he got the reputation as a solid glove man. They thought he was very sloppy, and lazy in the field. And his offense just doesn't justify the salary. Perhaps they just realized their mistake in giving him that contract in the first place. Top notch hitting middle infielders were getting a lot of money, and that started to trickle down into the less impressive hitters. Renteria, with a couple decent years in the 26/27/28 age range, had everybody believing he could keep it up. Maybe the whole Theo thing was really just a cover to allow the team to back away from that bad signing without Theo having to trade away his own mistake. The new guy is 1.5 years younger, solid defensively, and much cheaper. His 1/3 is more favorable than the 2/5 the Cubs gave Neifi. What exactly are the details in Neifi's contract? Is it a guaranteed 2.5 per year with bonuses or with bonuses it goes up to 2.5 per?
  3. I am not sure about Pie either, but I would not deal him for Lugo. I would deal him for Dunn or Abreu. Me too. I want a guaranteed 30/100/280/400 guy on this team in the OF if Pie is moved. You get more defense and average with Abreu but more power with Dunn but I'd take either in a second. Lugo isn't a luxury the Cubs can afford at this point.
  4. Happy 75th Ernie and you'll always be Mr. Cub!
  5. I'm going to the Auto Show this week anything special to look for? It'll be Syracuses 98th year of having this show, I wonder who had the first one?
  6. Poor Louisville 2-6 in the Big East. Heck, if we lose Wednesday we'll be 3-5.
  7. I thought Rusch was a decent hitter?
  8. AGonz number 2 got more money than Perez....makes me wonder if Boston would have opted for Neifi if he were available.
  9. Which myth is that Sully? Take your pick 1. Speed distracts the pitcher so he is not as effective 2. Speed distracts the catcher 3. You have to have speed at the top of the order 4. Small ball wins 5. "fundamentals" win related to 4. I don't think there is anything necessarily wrong with people holding those opinions. But when evidence is presented to the contrary and then people pick at the evidence or at the messenger or make mistatements about the what the messenger wrote, those are problems. I've got to go to practice in a minute but I think all those do help make you a better team. I like teams that are balanced and can win different ways.
  10. Which myth is that Sully?
  11. I disagree..I don't think the pitching is as good as it was once perceived to be, and not quite on WS level yet. Zambrano is really the only proven commodity in the rotation at this point, and although we paid big money to improve the pen, I still reserve the right to see it in action first. That's also banking on Baker being able to actually use them correctly as well. Sure, there is loads of talent, but thats been there for years. In 03, it almost got them to a WS, but every other year, it hasn't done anything for the Cub fans except give them another reason to hang their head in shame. If Wood & Prior are 100% , the Cubs are serious contenders. The Cubs are due for some good luck for a change. Also, 1-2-3 would be better than 2003, when Zambrano wasn't on All Star level. I just can't see the Cubs staff staying healthy all year. What I want is when one of them does get hurt a kid like Guzman or Hill steps in and does the job until they come back.
  12. Pie? If the Cubs lost a pick on a guy they already had Hendry should be fired and now! :D I think you mean Jones, right? And yes.
  13. That's what Ken Schreiber always says. "The coach that attempts to expose the possible weaknesses of the opposition by making his players adjust to the opponents style of play could be falling into a trap."
  14. I wonder how many runs Blanco prevented by doing so well? Let's say half and that adds up to be 40 runs he prevented.
  15. I agree and I hope the Cubs will spend the necessary cash to make this work. I remember watching Delgado catch when he was here. He wasn't that bad and he was better than Piazza. I think he hurt his shoulder and was moved to first.
  16. I'm curious on how many times Pierre was thrown out at second and how many times he was picked off.
  17. The Cubs have a first round pick and not another until the 5th I believe. I'm more curious on how Wilkens drafts in the latter rounds and what kind of gems he finds there especially if Hendry keeps losing draft picks by signing free agents. I just wonder if he'll be able to improve the International scouting & development. Stockstill has done a solid as far as drafting, even when the Cubs had what could be considered as a top farm system, it wasn't strong as far as draft picks. Prior was the strong pick, the strength was from the players from Venezuela (Zambrano), Korea (Choi), & Dominican Rep. (Cruz). I always considered one of the Jays main strengths is to aquire/draft players south of the States. I can't think of any Asian players in the organization though.

  19. Gross, Hill, and Adams are all pretty solid statistically, I don't know what their tools are. Gross has average speed...good arm and is a 15/280 kind of hitter Adams is about the same with a little less power but a little more speed Hill has the potential to hit 20 HR's and has a decent arm and decent speed. All 3 have nothing outstanding but all are solid players that can help a team win.
  20. I'm hoping he will be as well. A career average Williamson could make this bullpen great, and a "peak" Williamson could make it unstoppable. This team has put all it's hopes on the pitching side of things, ignoring the biggest offensive problems. So they need top to bottom great pitching to thrive. Yep....and stay healthy to stop the Enrique Wilsons from being on the team and hitting in the top 2 spots. They wouldn't play in Yankee Stadium until the World Series, so there won't be any need for his stadium knowledge. They do play at Minnesota, but thankfully Jones and Blanco will be there to guide the team around the field. The question is which ex-Indian will be brought into show the rest of the team the ropes in Cleveland. Being a pitcher, Howry won't be able to help the position guys. This is where the value of Grissom comes into play. :D Bet on the vet...you both win, how lucky can you get. (Old commercial) I really would like to see the Spring Training games and how Baker is going to use these players. I wouldn't be surprised to see Grissom have a better Spring than Malbry and I'm curious on who Baker is going to have play 3rd when ARam sits in the Spring. I hope we have enough posters from here go to give some reports on usage and how the players actually looked.
  21. Yoda and Terence Mann all at once. I am bald and overweight so that might just be right. So if Baker doesn't try his confidence builder thing with a vet he could: Pierre Walker/Hairston Lee ARam Jones/Murton Murton/Jones Barrett Cedeno/Perez That's not bad...not great but as you said if the pitchers do have good years good enough to compete IMO if everyone stays healthy and has their average or above average years and of course the injury bug doesn't bite so hard.
  22. What is this? It means he can't hit right handed but since he attempts to against leftys he must be able to. In other words, switch hitters seem to get way too many benefits of doubts from managers like Baker that assume they can be successful hitting both ways when in fact they are not. Jones tries to hit from the right side? I thought he was strictly a LH hitter. I thought he was a switch hitter? Hmmm....wrong again am I? Then hopefully this would help ease my pain.
  23. Why not just contract them and we won't have to worry about a name change.
