  1. If the Sox do sign Clemens do they have enough money to make AGonz the backup and go after Tejada? Or...is having this much pitching depth something they would want to give Clemens some extra time off?
  2. Those refs were brutal on many calls. But I'm not sure they determined the outcome. They made it much easier for Pittsburgh to seal the deal, but they may have won without all the help anyway, because Holgrem crapped the bed, repeatedly. It's not just the end of a half or game when a game is lost or won. Yeah, Seattle didn't make a lot of plays when they should have but the refs turned a lot of momentum around with some pretty bad calls.
  3. I didn't care who won but somebody tell me why the Steelers were the ones always posing with the Trophy during the commercials? Maybe I'm wrong but it seemed pretty tilted in Pittsburghs favor when it came to the pregame too. It just seemed to surprise me since it was Seattles first Super Bowl.
  4. It was an ok game but I'm getting real sick of refs determining the outcomes instead of the players.
  5. What really annoys me about Duke are the flops they do taking a charge under the basket. The ACC refs give it to them way too many times among other calls of course.
  6. I thought they were going to try and lock-up Pierre long term. This doesn't mean they can't. They've done this lots of times _ avoid arbitration and then sign a guy to a multiyear deal in spring training. they did it last season with Aramis, and nearly gave me a heart attack when they waited til opening day to sign him long term to that goofy contract. BTW, Bruce, has there been any indication of Aramis wanting to exercise that opt out clause? Ramirez repeatedly has said he wants to stay with the Cubs. There's been no talk of him opting out, but if he hits 40 HR and drives in a ton of runs with an OBP of .356, all bets might be off. I'm sorry Mr. Miles. I understand that you write for an established newspaper. How do you know what OBP is? Nicely played. Stick with the Daily Herald, the only paper in town that routinely gives OBP figures in stories and dares to dip in to the dangerous waters of sabermetrics. Maybe they think it has more to do with Star Wars then baseball.
  7. Kates went to Michigan and Mathews to Pitt so there go the possible pleasant surprises. Now to at least hold on to the ones that verbally committed.
  8. That would fit Goonys profile of a vet from a crap team.
  9. That kid made somebody angry. He seems like a decent guy to have on the bench so there must be something about his work ethic or some other intangible. Didn't he draw a walk in his ML debut, that's gotta be it. :D He probably scored and rubbed in Bakers face.
  10. Soto and Jose Reyes are still on the roster. If Barrett got banged up, they'd start Blanco and call up a kid. If he went down for the year, they'd probably pick up some journeyman off the waiver wire (the way they got Neifi and about 5 other shortstops in recent years), or trade for some vet from a crap team. Who's better...Soto or Reyes? I don't know who's a better defender, but Soto is the superior offensive player, and is also regarded as a good defensive catcher. Superior as in 280-220 or superior as in 230-200? Neither one would be likely to hit for any kind of average in the bigs if they were called up in 2006. Neither hits for much power. Soto draws a lot of walks (relatively speaking), which provides his edge offensively. Defensively, Soto is good, Reyes is better. Reyes is a better athlete as Soto is a bit "thick" in the bottom half. So an injury to Barrett would really make this lineup a lot worse than it already is? It would be worse than AGonz, Miller then the pitcher in 2003 if Perez is the starter at 2B or SS. This team is going to have to stay healthy.

  13. Soto and Reyes are both on the 40 man. I forgot about Reyes. Thanks.
  14. He's gone 130 or more 6 of the past 7 years, and 4 years in a row. And he's had very few DH or PH appearances the past 3 years, so he's catching most of the time. They signed Flaherty as a backup and have Josh Bard (Cleveland product) on the roster. I really think that 130 games is a thing of the past. If he can continue to do it the Red Sox will be in good shape but I see him breaking down a little this year. Just a prediction. I could see him breaking down a bit as well, but a 130 game schedule is not that much for a catcher. Full-time guys usually go around 145. He hasn't been used a ton in his career. I think with regular rest, he could get to 130 games again this season. That's enough for 5 days of rest a month. For precaution you could give him 6 or 7 a month early in the season, and see how he holds up. That way you should be able to get at least 120, and maybe stretch him a bit at the end if you're in a race, or rest him extra if you've locked up a spot. It'll be interesting to see how this falls out. What happens to the Cubs if Barrett gets hurt? Do they still have Soto around or would someone else take that spot?

  16. The AAA team was in Wichita before that, correct?

  18. So is Pierre, Walker/Hairston, Lee and ARam! Who's in the 5 slot for the Sox? Nixon or Varitek. The Red Sox will be a top 3 run scoring team in the AL, the Cubs won't be a top 3 run scoring team in the NL. That to me is the big difference. Having Nixon 5 and Varitek 6 is a lot better than what the Cubs could do. Do you know who is backing Varitek up because I don't think he will go 130 or more games this year.

  20. That reminds me of a Hey Arnold when he was on a basketball team and Tuckers dad was the coach. "Whatever you do...get the ball to Tucker!".
  21. Haven't you heard? We already have a solid RFer in JJ, after all he's going to better than a lot of people think or was it he's going to surprise a lot people? Mr. Hendry's job depends on it IMO.
  22. That would be a nice move for the Sox. Hendry to counteract this would then sign Branyan.
  23. I remember thinking the Cubs had a great farm system. I agree with you. Other than Wood, Z and Prior I see nothing from this system in the MacPhail era.
  24. That's nice of you to think of Syracuse...thanks!
