  1. Dusty has shown over and over his tendency to completely overhaul the lineup with a lefty on the mound. Sometimes stacking as much as 6 or 7 righties in a row. The few times he did drop Burnitz were against lefties, and he's repeatedly sat his lefties against LHP, much more so than he's sat his mediocre RH against RHP. I think he's got a hangup with the L on L matchup. And in this case at least, it could serve the team well. What worries me is the illusion that Jones is a switch hitter though. Baker just doesn't seem to get that part of the equation IMO and I think he'll hit Jones in the 5 the whole time to prove he has confidence in him. This is why the great Johnnie B is such a players manager.
  2. They're just about equals in my book right now. What advantages Murton has offensively are balanced by the advantages Cedeno brings defensively. Murton gets a higher rating when talking about the lineup. He's the better hitter. When thinking about the order, Murton gets a higher billing. When talking about overall value as a player though, the position comes into play, and Cedeno gets a bounce there. Neither player is likely to be great, for his position or otherwise. Both should be perfectly acceptable for their position, age and cost, though. I think the second Cedeno struggles he'll be on the bench learning how to hit from Perez. Cedeno, if he gets to struggle and battle his way out of a slump, will hit 260/310 and since Baker is the manager IMO he will see that and put the gold glover Perez in instead. I think he'll be a decent SS but will he actually be good enough to put up better numbers than Perez? Is a 290/300-340/350 really in his future and what SS's is he equivalent too? I really don't see him as fast but he seems to have a good arm and range.
  3. Since I don't think Baker would ever platoon Jones I wonder if he would swing him with Murton in the 5 spot depending on the pitcher? This would take some thinking but at least it would be a psuedo platoon and Jones wouldn't be hitting 5th against a lefty. This, assuming Walker would be at the 2 spot.
  4. Maybe it's me but when I watch Novoa it just seems his pitches have little or no movement. He has nice velocity but the lack of movement IMO means he has to hit the right spots or is going to get lit up. I like Wuertz more and I agree the Cubs would be crazy to just let either guy go unless something really bizzare happens.
  5. But, it's much easier at that stage rather than doing it with someone early on in their pro career rather than later. If a team drafted a HS and a college player with similar recognition problems (assuming similar makeups), the team will have a better chance of improving upon the HS athlete rather than the collegiate one, simply b/c he will have had the 3-4 years to improve upon that. I agree 100% that the older a player is the harder it is for him to break his bad habits or learn a new one.
  6. Wow...what a way to win and lose a game.
  7. You mean he was a great catcher at one time? I always considered him one of the absolute worst catchers at calling a game and handling a staff, ever. I also don't recall him ever really being better than average at throwing out runners either. This is a bad move for SD. He was always a very good hitter but a below average reciever in every way and he's getting worse.
  8. I agree. It's time for him to turn this thing up or move over and let someone else do the job.
  9. The hardest thing to do is convince some 18-19 year olds that their way isn't going to make them successful in MLB. They have had success all their lives and getting them to buy into a different approach is often difficult.
  10. I would like to see this team have another manager to remove doubt that about Hendry. Baker just has too many faults when combined that just make for a poor manager. We'll see how the last two World Series winners have the shaped the Cubs. They should have the chemistry of the 2004 Red Sox and the pitching and defense of the 2005 WhiteSox and this seems to have been one of Hendrys goals. He's going to sink or swim in it this year....I hope, because this 78-84 win thing is not the way to go. I think how the 2 and 5 slots do in the order so will the Cubs. If the Cubs do not get at worst average production out of those spots I think we'll see another of those 78-84 win seasons unless the pitching is spectacular and healthy.
  11. Well that's 4 in a row. These big guys are terrible and Mac likes to shoot way too much, these 5-18 games are getting a little to common.
  12. God forbid it would be a move that would hurt the team. I wonder where Mike is going to play when he's not catching? Well, those are ROTOworld's comments. Yeah I know....you know I dispise fantasy baseball and reading that in any context bugs me especially when how the team does isn't mentioned.

  14. The Cubs are just more clutch when Neifi bats at the two hole.
  15. Ready for what? Soft tossing? According to reports, he is soft tossing already & will be ready to throw off the mound in February. Supposedly, what will take the most time is to get his velocity & stamina back. I'd be thrilled to have this be true and to have him last the year without going back on the DL.
  16. Tampa Bay Hanging Chads
  17. Syracuse usually has Academic All-Americans in football and is in the top 10 Football wise every year.
  18. I was wondering the same thing. I got Jose's autograph when the Pirates were in St Louis back in '66. That's when they used Birch Trees for paper right? Stone tablets, 'Cuse, stone tablets. I could see you as a kid with your chisle and tablet yelling for Jose to sign it. Jose was a utility type infielder wasn't he?

  20. I wonder if he is related to the ex Pirate Jose Pagan?
  21. I wonder why the Mets gave up on him. Is he out of options? He sucks? Maybe but I don't think he has horrible numbers and I have no idea how good his defense is.
  22. The question is, will Joe Morgan mention Bonds more than he'll mention the great Joe Morgan? If you took a drink every time Joe Morgan referred to his career or the Big Red Machine, how long would it take to get drunk?[/i] Maybe we'll have a Joe Morgan drinking game thread?
  23. I wonder why the Mets gave up on him. Is he out of options?
  24. Maybe it's some kind of Pagan ritual by the Cubs to torture us? Sorry...I just couldn't stop myself. This seems to be an interesting move by the Cubs. Let's hope it's just before something good like a big trade for that impact bat.
  25. IMO...the better he pitches the closer he gets to closing. I'm curious on how he's feeling and if he can handle the back to back games. If he can and be effective the Cubs might have one of the best pens in baseball.
