  1. If this is true, I'm excited to see what this kid can do for us. I've been hearing about this kid for three friggin years - I am PSYCHED to see what he can do at the MLB level. I just hope that if he tears it up, they won't immediately ship him out for Doug Mientkewicz or some other scrub that can't help us near as good as a strong and healthy Guzman. I doubt it. Hendry has to keep an eye to the 2007 rotation with the possibility of, at least, 2/ 5 of this year's anticipated starters nolonger being with the club. The Cubs will need some quality arms. If Guzman pitches well I think he'll start for the Cubs next year. 2007: Wood Prior Maddux Zambrano Guzman  Substitute Marshall for Wood, and you'd have a nice rotation. I think JH may pass on Kerry after this season.
  2. Though Hill is pitching well, he is still making adjustments at AAA that will make him a more dependable, consistent pitcher in the long-run. Nothing wrong wth giving him more work at Iowa, whether to incorporate him into the Cubs rotation next year or to use him as trade bait.
  3. How about Ryu and Sing for Wilson? Perhaps overpaying a bit, but I don't see Ryu in the Cubs long-term plans.
  4. I have a sense that Wuertz won't be coming back to Wrigley and will be in another major league uniform this year.
  5. From what I saw of his performance last night, I think the call up was the right decision.
  6. If Murton had career numbers comparable to Grace or O'Neill, I'd be a very happy camper.
  7. My wife and I sat behind home at Saturday night's game in Round Rock. I observed the following: Rich Hill - Hill was working with three pitches tonight: FB at 88-91, changeup(?) at 79-81, and a tight curve at 71-74. Hill didn't feature a 12-6 curve tonight. He had very good control for most of the night and used his FB in tight situations to strike out batters, some of which would have been crushed by major league hitters. More consistency and less "wow" than we saw last year. Definitely looked like a #3 or #4 starter rather than either a LOOGY or #1 or #2 starter. Felix Pie - Wow! Casually stroked a double over the 1B bag at one AB, then smoked a liner in RF for another double. His plate discipline was mixed - one AB featured a very confident plate presence when taking pitches with an idea of what he was doing at the plate, but in the 9th with runners on and two out, he was too much of a free swinger and looked bad striking out. David Aardsma - Made hitters look bad with a slider at 80 and a FB at 93-95. Not wild and looked like he could contribute as a middle reliever at Wrigley this year.
  8. I know this is a broken record," said one GM, "but not enough pitching. If John Koronka and Rick Bauer are in your rotation, you don't have enough pitching." http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2407713 I don't intend to be critical of Koronka. I saw the game on TV, and he did the best with what he had. He's just better suited as a short reliever.
  9. So, 103 pitches and no walks for Guzman. Not too bad, despite the 4 ER.
  10. It supposed to get warmer this weekend.
  11. I'm attending Saturday's game at Round Rock. Who will be pitching for the Iowa Cubs on Saturday?
  12. My wife and I have tickets behind home plate for this game. Who is likely to be pitching for the Iowa Cubs? Any prospect, besides Pie, on whom I should focus during the game?

  14. Seconded, especially while the starting rotation is half-staffed. Good Lord! Today Dusty pulled Z after only 111 pitches because we have a real bullpen now. Let's keep the bullpen intact. We can always trade Hill, Ryu or Marmol if we need a spare part.
  15. Didn't the Cubs target Shaver as a relief specialist when they drafted him?
  16. Baseball Prospectus rates them as the bottom two RFs in the NL.
  17. Seems to me that OAK and TEX are outliers, with the Cubs bunched with a large number of teams (55-60 range). We aren't far and away the worst team when it comes to taking BBs. The Cubs also pick high ceiling HS guys (Harvey, Dopirak, CPatt, Pie) who often strike out often and don't walk as much. As Tim mentioned in another thread, with a $100 million payroll, the Cubs should be making high risk / high reward draft picks because the Cubs can buy average / better than average players. Oakland has a different drafting philosophy, in part because the team works with a smaller budget.
  18. Just as our system is "falling" in BA's rankings the major league club is getting a stream of position prospects and a flood of pitching prospects heading to Wrigley. BA overrated the Cubs' system a few years ago and is now underrating the Cubs' system.
  19. What would have Hill brought? The Os wanted Z or Prior for Tejada. You need two REASONABLE teams to make a good deal.
  20. My guess is b/c of Cedeno's struggles & with Dusty's love for Neifi I see a platoon coming to start the season. Platooning Cedeno with Neifi! is not a problem if it allows Cedeno to regain his confidence.
  21. My sleeper is Randy Wells. Could make a nice setup man in 2007 or 2008. Not bad for a former catcher!
  22. Of Guz, Hill, Marshall and Ryu, Marshall seems to be throwing the best. It would only make sense that he is the one they would be thinking of as the 5th starter. Things may change between now and April 15th (when that 5th starter will first be needed) but as of now, no one is throwing better than Marshall. I'm not surprised. Guzman is rusty, Hill needs to work on his secondary pitches or become a LOOGY, and Ryu, while impressive in spring training, probably isn't as mature as Marshall and would be better suited for a half season in Iowa before coming to Wrigley. Also, given that Marshall didn't pitch that many innings last year, I think it would be better to use him as a fifth starter now and Ryu later in the season, if Ryu is needed.
  23. There's a fine line between being injured and having pain or discomfort. My point is, I'm not sure that he knows the difference between the two. There are pitchers with long careers that deal with ongoing pain. I'm trying not to be cynical however, I do recall Prior saying last year that he's going to have to learn to pitch through pain. I don't see any change. Here we go again I think he needs to do more in the offseason to get himself ready to pitch. Blueheart, Short, sweet, and on point. =D>
  24. I don't know that I would trade Pie for Tejada at this point. I think Felix has shown he has a decent shot of being more productive (OPS wise) than Tejada in the not-too distant future. If the Cubs keep Pie, then who goes in 2007? Jacque or Juan?
