    Not happening with the Cubs. He's played for three big-league managers and none of the three has been fond of him. His most recent manager was in the Cubs system as a coach. I'm sure they still talk. So no, he's not coming here. Quite a contrast with the kind words said about Soriano by some in the Nats organization.

    I think this contract was reasonable, given 1. the Cubs don't have much in the minor league system 2. the current free agent market is nuts, and 3. management wants to win in the next couple of years. Cubs fans deserve a shot at a WS championship sooner rather than later. We've suffered long enough! If Wilken can do his magic with the Cubs, they'll have plenty of cheap home-grown talent to compensate for overpaying Soriano late in his career. The Cubs have decided that they can spend like the NY and Boston teams. It's about time :!: Hopefully they won't ignore player development at the same time.

    We are in no rush to offer abritration, as long as it is by the deadline. If team signs him today we can still offer arbitration and get the picks Isn't Pierre a type B free agent? If so, then the Cubs would get no compensation per the new labor agreement, right? We get a supplemental pick. The Giants don't have to give up anything. Thats the difference. I think. Teams that lose a Type B free agent will now earn a sandwich pick instead of taking selection from club that signed player. Link Thanks. A sandwich for Pierre would be terrific! Corrected. :wink:

    Bruce Miles did mention in his chat that Ronny needed time to mature. That would make sense to platoon him with Jacque. As was mentioned earlier in the thread, he could play a number of positions, which would avoid the mistake of not having a backup at each position, as happened last year.

    Bruce, Thanks for taking time to answer our questions at NSBB. What has been your impression of the development of Ronny Cedeno and Angel Guzman in 2006? They seem to have played below their natural talent. I get the sense, however, that young Venezulean players can be very emotional, which might have impacted their performance. Do you think Carlos Zambrano can help one or both mature / blossom into major league starters in 2007?

    I was just thinking there was some room for hope in that regard. He has been with the organization for a long time, though, so hard to say if opinions have already been calcified. At the risk of being a contrarian, I think the Cubs have been excellent at times in player evaluation. They traded Choi, Bobby Hill, and Brendan Harris while acquiring DLee, Aram, and Murton. Unlike most of this board, the Cubs were on target about Jacque's abilities. The problem isn't scouting, it's not relying on stats as well as scouting. Finding a platoon partner for Jacque, batting high OBP guys #1 and #2, etc. The management team needs balance, not a complete overhaul. My comment was more geared toward the stats side, and it seems that -- if Gary Hughes' comments in that roundtable were any indication -- balance has been lacking in the front office. Fair enough.

    Those are good questions, and I have asked several of my sources Murton-related questions in the last few weeks. The responses have been pretty nebulous. If I were to summarize, the consensus is that the Cubs like Matt a lot, but feel LF should be a power position, and thus would be open to trading him if a good deal came along that improved the slugging percentage of the club. Translation: not being shopped, but would prefer to trade him. And that ticks me off because if I were GM, I would get out of the dark ages, and look to increase power at CF or SS before I dealt a hitter with so much promise a la Murton. It's going to be wait-and-see, nevertheless I think it will be a better off-season than last off-season. In all fairness, if the Cubs see Pie in CF in 2007 and see Harvey or Colvin in RF by the end of 2008 (or in Colvin in CF with Pie in RF), then a trade involving Murton might make sense, assuming the Cubs get fair value. The options for getting power in the SS might be limited and not cost-effective.

    I like it. The Cubs have enough pitching PROSPECTS to trade. IMO, they should get one or two veteran "inning eaters", and have Guzman and Marshall (if not traded) start in AAA to get seasoned and get their act together the way Hill did this year.

    It actually is a pretty good site. I visit it daily. He doesn't too much of the rumor thing. But again it's just a rumor, although dones't seem like a far fetched one. Actually, it does seem farfetched, IMHO. Murton is great value for the cost, and the Cubs seem enthusiastic about Pie, whom I think will be ready for Wrigley by June 2007.

    I think it would take Marshall and Pie.....or if the Cubs weren't willing to trade Felix. Marshall, Cedeno, and Marmol. If the Cubs trade Pie, wouldn't that suggest the Cubs think Harvey has a good chance of contributing in the majors? His arrival would coincide with the end of JJones' contract.

    He'd be stupid if he didn't. He's earned enough to be set for life.

    My gut is that Murton will be the starting LF for the foreseeable future. Assuming that Pie will be starting on the team by June 1 of next year, either Pierre or Jones will be gone by that time.

    I think his main problem is confidence, not unlike Rich Hill earlier this year. Guzman has nasty stuff. Let's hope he can put it together next season. Confidence is not a problem, throwing strikes is the problem; or rather not throwing them. Confidence is an outcome, not a cause. Guzman has struggled not becuase of what is between his ears, same with Hill. I'll concede the point in part, but often Guzman gets hammered trying to overthrow a fastball instead of trusting his breaking stuff.

    this makes me think Hendry will call him up. He can really "catch the ball" He can catch the ball and can't take a walk. He's perfect for Hendry. If he can get his IsoD up to 0.40 or better with a strong SLG, he might make a nice 6th hitter in the lineup. There still may be hope for him.
